Welcome to Club SAITO !

Welcome to the club kwalker. I don't have any saitos that big but they're all pretty much the same; wonderful runners.

The 180 is awesome. I have couple myself.
Along with a couple smaller Saito’s.

welcome aboard Kwalker, but you must be warned early, you will soon be a Saito freak like the rest of us
hey guys, you should have been around for the bearing wars we had back a few years with our OS Hyper 50 Heli engines.. while the first OS 50 SX Heli (silver head) had NTN rear bearings, they were lasting 4, 5, or more years, yet the un-badge rear bearing that came in the Hyper 50 engine (blue head) were lasting only 1 or 2 gallons, some times 3 gallons, if you were lucky., but most were not lucky.
I had 2 OS Hyper 50s, well I bought a NTN and for the other I bought a NSK, I bought both bearings at the same time. in the hand, well I tell you the NSK was smoother !!

M
LOL that name "Spark-O-Matic" was for the plane, but I was thinking about calling my FA 115 "J-Lo" because as the way Pete talks about the 115, it must have it, all over it

hey guys, I forgot to tell, my wife & son and daughter in-law came back from their trip, he won a $Grand and his wife won $400 in the casino, he said they each were playing a penny slot machine and the machines kept giving them extras and specials, he said once in a while he would put a dime in and win, he said 1 win gave him $500, he said he wants to go back, LOL I told him if he goes back he will slowly be paying back the casino

I just remembered, my fiend went to Las Vegas, he was standing by a big slot machine, he was waiting for his wife and he was broke, but he pulled out 2 quarters and put them in the slot, bells went off and he won 2 $grand, some guy walked up to him and told him that he should have put 2 dollars in because if he did he would have won 200 $grand, that was some 25 years ago

New bearings and gaskets done.I use between 3 and 5% castor in all my saito engines.Stripped this one straight after a flying day and as usual the cam gear and pushrods are wet with oil,standard cc vent.

Dave that white grease is an old tub of shell molly denim disulfide (MoS2 for the tech heads) i just use a dab to hold gaskets in place,the rest of the parts get a wipe over with automatic transmission fluid.

I still look for European stuff for my own uses.

When I was doing bearing replacements in machine repair, Chinese bearings were not a factor. The Japanese stuff was just starting to show up at the bearings dealers. It was a similar situation. The American and European bearings would blow NTN and NSK stuff away in every way.

One of the local bearing suppliers.:

Often you can even find NOS USA made such as New Departure Hyatt etc.

Be aware, a Euro name doesn't automatically mean Euro made. They are however made to very high standards.

Welcome K, we have quite the diverse group as you'll see from viewing our varied and differing opinions
I'm Dave, I keep castor far from my engines and get busted almost daily for it.

Rudolph is Pete,RC guy and motorcyclist, a very talented builder and motorcycle and auto painter.
Captain Crunch is Mike, flooring guy and RC pilot
Jesse is Gary, man of many talents, RC pilot and builder, great all around machinist, a motorcyclist also
Jim is Jim I don't his vocation, he is an RC builder and flyer
GlowGeek, I'm short on his facts
ACDC, we have trade engines with each other
All of us rebuild engines and compare notes here.

Taipan and OS-f,The Fox Miracle lines up the same as the Taipan.

Fox Miracle

Taipan completely fills thread cavity like Fox does.

OS-f leaves two of the cylinders threads exposed even though the nose protrudes into the combustion chamber.
Glow plugs, these pictures are not as good as I'd like, a while back there was some mention that certain glow plugs left threads exposed in the combustion chamber of Saitos. I experimented with a Fox Miracle, Saito SS, Taipan 4-c special and an OS -f. The Fox Miracle and the Taipan completely filled the thread cavity, the OS-f and the Saito ss left about 2 threads exposed. Big deal or no, I don't know, I have always thought that the Fox Miracle, the Taipan and the Sonic Tronics, 4-c all provided smooth midrange and great idle, no plug seems to effect top rpm.

I found the Fox plugs ran the smoothest over the F. I have some Merlin plugs and the verdict is still out. https://www.merlinglowplugs.com/

A bit of curiosity here. IIRC, the Saito FA-130T cam set had unique part numbers. Was the FA-182 cam pair a good replacement?

No problems here from the OS "F" plug, or the Enya #3 plug. Not expensive and very light in weight

They last darn near forever too!

Here are the first round of Saito 50 numbers: Each number arrived at three times by reducing rpm by 100 rich then re-peaking.
Saito 50 GK
Prop===APC 12x6
Fuel===Wildcat 10% with 18% full syn.
Plug===Fox Miracle
Muffler=Stock cast, not the revised version but same internals.
Turbo Header
RPM stock muffler======9,240
RPM with Turbo Header==9,390
Idle=================1,770
The poit, poit, poit, is alive and well at idle with the Turbo Header.

Front vented engine below the cam box on the crankcase. What interesting is the original main bearing was a shielded bearing. You would think with a front vent that the main bearing would be open to allow efficient flow of oil to the vent.
