that's easy for you to say, your planes are perfect, you don't crash, you just land wrong LOL

LOL far from perfect, but they do fly, mostly, except when I don't know what the CG should be for a plane that doesn't really exist, and I am too dumb to figure it out. It only stays in the air for so long before it finally craps itself and decides it would rather be rekitted. Almost made it down properly until some moron drove across the end of the runway as I was just about to make it. I struggled a good 5 minutes trying to get it lined up again, then something let loose and I couldn't get it to stop rolling.

Like what's the worst that can happen, right? It either flies, flies well, or becomes a story to be told.

a story to be told

one day I was out flying my .50 Heli, some guy drove up and stopped right in front of me, the guy stuck his head out of the window and stated to ask questions, boy he got me way off my track, but I got it down OK, but it was really troublesome to me, I had only been flying 2 years at the time

Default The Other Side of the Story

One day I was out in Vermont looking for maple syrup.
Instead, I saw some nervous looking guy doing some very weird stuff with a helicopter.
I pulled up my car in front of him and started asking him what he was doing. Instantly, his flying improved and he made a good landing. He was so pleased that he wagged his middle finger as I pulled away.

I generally get a little profane in such instances and repel the offender rather quickly. The generally don't make the same mistake twice.

Lonnie i only have one saito fa30 in a large phoenix super light, "the lttle engine that could" is a constant surprise for it's size. It's in a tail dragger so no worries about prop clearance if you run a 10x6,i use a mas gf3 series prop, in flying tune that combo gives me 10600 on the ground.

Hmmm...those pesky 3D heli pilots, on some sundays they are thick as flies on cow cakes.Over a beer and benchracing session afterwards a couple of my WW2 scale flying mates said maybe we should all take our shotguns next time, and put up a realistic ack ack barrage for them instead of having to walk all the way down to the flight line for an argument. As someone else here said, temptation leans on the doorbell, but i think HE was just trying to be poetic

Chrome, Open, Re-enforced Plastic Nylon 46 Retainers, C3 Fit, ABEC #3, Offset Balls, Arrow OD Pointing Towards Ball Direction, AF2 Oil Lube

Maybe some of you understand this lingo, especially the Offset Balls part, it's probably not something painful for the bearing. I ordered a set for the Saito .50, the rear bearing is open the front is rubber sealed.

Dave, Pete, thanks for the prop/rpm info on the fa30.

Dave, don't be surprised if you can feel a little play in the crank using C3 clearanced bearings. You may also notice more oil being ejected through the front bearing seal as well.

Not hardly.

Didn't look like it before and it still doesn't. Unless it can fit on the pin still and that is a very distorted pic.....

But it was whacked by the pin.

I don't know how to figure it, the back plate would not let it come off, it does fit on the crank pin, loosely of course. So it must have been assembled with it off the crank pin then put back on before I got it. I used to say that a ride in a Mail Truck would heal Super Tigre carbs but not this.

The lip in the bare rod pic looks like the rod was in it but, and I'll stop there.

PS, thanks

Dave, looks to me like someone tried to run a gummed and rusted engine with a near frozen up piston pin/rod connection. The excessive side loads on big end of the rod exceeded the oil film strength, overheated the big end of the rod and the crank pin elongated it. My unsolicited take on the failure.

you could question yourself a million times and still not know the truth, Dave had a photo of the combustion chamber and it was fine, maybe that rod and a bunch of other parts from different engines were thrown together and Dave bought them

Pete, a guys over in NY as he was flying told a friend that he was going to fly his cheap plane into a Heli, well, he did, parts everywhere, it was a big woop-T-do in the Heli forums, lots of arguing. the guy with the plane refused to pay for the Heli, the club the guy was in offered to pay for the Heli, but as I remember the owner of the Heli would not take the money, said it was not the clubs fault.. I don't think that plane-guy would do that again..

as for me I'm burned out on Helis, I'm a Saito guy now

Pete, I can be a little poetic at time, here>

your Saito ant no cherry tomato
it has no little toe or tennis elbow
but you can look at it when eating your potato

hows that ??

Or could be similar to what a 14 year old, fellow club member did a few years ago. He lifted the cylinder and actually managed to put it back together without the rod on the pin. First hit on the starter made a rod that looked similar to the one Dave has. That is why I asked if the big end would still fit the crankpin. If not, then there is no way it was on the pin when the damage occurred.
Always easiest to evaluate for the person who actually has the parts in hand.

I'll take another picture with the rod on the crank pin, it does fit on there.
