Whether or not a meth/glow engine needs nitro to run and tune correctly depends greatly on the compression ratio of the engine. There is a broad range of compression ratios amongst YS and Saito engines. Some of them would run fine with 0% nitro and others would be difficult if not impossible to tune with no nitro. The YS 115 WS for instance has a very low compression engine which is designed to run on like 20% nitro minimum. There are several low compression Saitos as well that I feel would run poorly on 0% nitro with glow ignition.

If you're thinking that the OS G5 gasser plug may help lower compression meth fueled engines run better on 0% nitro you may be on to something there, not sure. There is a catalytic reaction between platinum and alcohol as well as between platinum and gasoline. If the G5 gasser plug has a higher platinum content than a standard glow plug to run with gas then that may help.. Again, not sure.

It would be an interesting experiment to run 0% nitro in a low compression Saito, like a later version FA65 for instance, to see if the G5 gasser plug helps.

Thanks I’ve have it book marked. The engine sizes I’m interested in doing this to would be in the smaller size range 50-90 4 stroke ys and Saito.

I hope my YS110 doesn't need high nitro fuel, or it will continue to sit on the shelf, and I will find a Saito for the Mustang instead.

Acdii, all YS engines are said to run well on 20% nitro fuel. There are lots of reports out there where they run fine on 15% and a few reports of peeps running 10% with no issues except down on power a bit.

The YS115WS (Warbird Special) was developed specifically for warbird pylon racing. It has a lower than normal compression ratio and is designed for running 60% nitro or some such craziness. It is a monster!

60% Nitro I couldn't afford to run it with that much Nitro. Last time I looked it was almost $90 a gallon.

Well that must be how those YS’s get there power.
they need 60% nitro. That most be why I haven’t had good luck with them. They don’t preform with less than 30% nitro.

Must say that I have run my YS on 10% to 14%. Never needed nor wanted more even though I am well aware that they can handle it.. They make tremendous power and run very, very well at the 10 and 14% percentages. The very same fuel I used with Saitos .
But then, I have only started running them since 1979
The fact than handle 60% just indicates how tough they are.

Lonnie,

Sorry but I didn't make it to the PO with the 120/125 tailpiece. Will send it tomorrow.

Since it was here and I was bored last night,
I took the key measurements. All nominal dimensions are the same.

I will however send the genuine 125 tail.

Whew, that's a relief. I thought it may have gotten lost in the mail. Thanks for the update Gary.

The YS 63 ran pretty good on the 15% I have, but I still need to tune it, I had issues with the regulator that caused it to flood after a while, hopefully I got the regulator working properly now, it was gummed up inside. I may bench the 110 to see how it runs, I have Wildcat 15% that I run all my engines on, but also have a case of SIG 15% 4 stroke to try.

Just picked up a Don's Custom Models 1/4 scale 100" WS Super Chipmunk. I have no idea what to do with it but couldn't pass it up that cheap. I don't have an engine for it and can't afford one either.

hey you, you Hog lovers, check this out. I thought it looks to be in the Hog family but it's smaller. I like it. I like the way mid wings fly.
I would think it could be built 5% larger with no problem,, that would add 3 inches to the wing, but I can't do the numbers for the Fuse cause I don't have the stock length.

That is a blast from the past I like it. Ask Rob maybe since he already has the cut file he can bump it up for you? $65.00 for the short kit isn't a bad price for that size a plane it is now.

100" is a serious size Chipmunk! I don't where I would store it or how I would get it to he field. Maybe you could saddle it and ride to the field?

Mike, check out my link, scroll down and click on the Print, then at the bottom enlarge it a bit, I like the side view. as stock it should weigh no more than 4.3 pounds and fly a 35 to 40. so enlarging it a bit it should be good for a 61.

I love those classic designs. I had a 1939 Air Trails Sportster like this one.

Mine was covered in translucent red and yellow and converted from free flight to 3 channel. I was planning on finding a Saito 30 for it but every time I took it up more glue joints popped. It finally ate dirt when the fuse behind the cabin let go. Sad, I admired the simplicity of the design. So small and cute.

I recently discovered Laser Designs sells the short kit.....hmmmm
