Welcome to Club SAITO !

Gentlemen.. I am looking for pictures showing the internals of a DIY/ modified Saito 170R3, 200R3 or FG33R3 intake manifold.
I know the latest 120R3 have a new design, but what about the 200 and 33 radials ?
My intention is to modify the existing manifold on my FA170-R3.
(ordering an aftermarket kit is not within my budget)
Thanks for any constructive comments

Thanks TR, I wanted a Triumph ThunderBird for several years, now all they make is crotch rockets, bummer. I am going to take that drawing to a place in Fredericksburg that did a great job of enlarging a plan for me. I want to see if enlarging the plan to 1/12th of the full scale 46' 10" wing span, (rounded up to 48") will end up with the barrel/fuse the scale length and diameter. I have worked with Foam Core Board before building the MudDuck, AgriDuck and two of the smaller Ducks.

The Saito 65's from Mike arrived yesterday, Four of them, the 65 GK has no initial on the right mounting lug so it is an early 1st run high compression version. You can see the bumpy piston, the inverted one has a F on the right lug, the left most ones are an M and an N. The inverted 65 with the older carb is spic and span inside, I'd say barely run.

I sure thank you Mike, I'll check it all out and see see what's what. I should be able to make four good engines out of it all. I also have some spare 65 parts.
Lonnie, do you have any 65 versions to compare? Thanks, Dave

I used my lathe and squared up the spray bar Mike was working on and found the exact needle to match it, it's 50 and pouring rain here. I'll run it when I can.

Thanks Mike. I had fun with it, broke it in the rest of the way after receiving it from Dave. Thanks Dave! A lovely engine to start and run. Very well behaved for a high compression engine, but Alas, it's slated for someone else's project, an old timer airframe that's something like 100" span. I can't remember what it's called but the engine will suit it fine.

This one is identical, I think, what letter is on the right mounting lug on yours?
Did any Saito ever have a stainless steel header pipe? Thanks
I have a muffler like yours but it is bent, I think I can make it presentable.

The letter "A" is stamped on the lug. If you need an exhaust system I can send you one. AFAIK, Saito has never offered a SS exhaust but I haven't seen it all!
There's a guy selling a 65 on RCG classies and it has the new style case (low profile cam box). I tried to tell him that the 65 never came with that style case but he can't be bothered by someone like me.
The one in your last pic could be a high compression version, it has the correct cylinder mounting flange shape. Have you checked the piston on that one?

Yes, the piston in the upright engine is exactly like the the one in the GK block, I don't know where the flat top piston goes yet, or more accurately where I'm going to put it. I'm glad for the distraction from the the health issue. I don't mind using the cast mufflers, but thanks for the kind offer. Mike sent several choke clips, Thanks Mike

I couldn't find that ad, Thanks, Dave

Dave, here's the so called "65" ad. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...-price-reduced
I'm not sure what engine it is but it's not a 65 eg wrong case, wrong jug. Looks like a 115 maybe? If it is a 115 the price is good.
Update: I sent the seller another PM with dimensions to check. It can't be anything but a 115!

My Feedback: (27)

I saw that ad for the Saito 65 and it took me 2 seconds looking at the pictures to know it was NOT a 65.
All this talk of the FA65 got me to dig out the two I have. One is still un-run in the gold and black box. The other has been run. Both have the silver mufflers. The un-run 65 has a P on the lug and the one that has been run looks like a V on the lug. So my question is, how old are they?

Got word back from the seller of the supposed "65". He really doesn't care that he has it listed as the wrong size engine. Says that someone is going to get a good deal if it's a 65 or a great deal if it's a 115. That's just soooo wrong.
Maybe someone that realizes that it's a 115 will buy it instead of someone who actually needs a 65.
Nice 115 Dave. Appears to be quite new.
