Hey BarracudaHockey, how are you going to get rpm with the CORE? Does the Powerbox RPM sensor work with Saito FG90? I know they were having a lot of trouble with that sensor and they are manufacturing a new model to replace it.
As far as temp sensors go that is good to know Glowgeek. The Powerbox temp sensor is a reliable instrument but it sounds like the way we use them they cannot guarantee of safe operating temperatures. Which is a shame.

I'm not getting RPM data, I have a Tech Aero for the ignition and not the Spark Switch Pro.

I just wanted to play with the temp telemetry while I was converting it to the Pioneer/26D

Why not Keleo ??
What is the difference ?

Same pic as before. What are you asking Rob? If it's about a difference in the size of the rings, I don't know.

MMM Exhaust ring is adjustable. Not a major issue but the Keleo exhaust blocks a direct connection to the mixtures, Plus I do not want to re-drill the cowl to accommodate a flex line. I know very small issue but deal breaker for me. This is not the case for the Saito 325 Radial I have, that has a Keleo exhaust.

Ahh ok, so you don´t have the original carburetor then..
On my FA170 there is a Keleo and it is not blocking anything,,
If I would change something it would be the diameter so the ignition caps would fit better.

To my knowledge it is original. The engine was new but open box. The last owner might have changed the carbs but I was told by CH that it was a known issue with the exhaust on the 170.

If your carb is as mine on the picture then it is original (note the HS needle coming out just behind the ring),
have no idea but probably there is different versions of the Keleo ring exhausts ??

100% mine is original if yours is original, based on that picture. My exhaust ring was surely not the same position like yours.

Hey David the 115 showed up just now! Man, the old cam is even more hideous in person. Thanks for the new throttle arm! I just thought the compression was good before, it is so tight now I can't turn it until I get a prop on it. She looks better now with the correct label installed.

Mike

I am glad you're pleased, yep that label makes it officially a 115, it looks good on there. The outer hole in your throttle arm is a little large. I think it should have a larger prop washer like the 120 but I don't have any extras. Let us know what you think of the Sonic Tronics Glo-Devil plug.

I'd like to consult some paint experts, My wife donated a Toaster oven to bake the painted engine parts. I need to know how long and how hot. Maybe our Bikin Buddy Pete has a suggestion or two.

For high temp paints my vote is to bake it at 180-200°f for an hour.

David, if I hadn't posted a picture I would have pulled everyone's leg and said you gave the 115 a cheetah print paint job just to see the reaction. The Ryan will get Aerofoil so silver is the way to go on the 115. If I ever get around to finishing the Tiger 2 I inherited I may try painting a .45 bright orange to match. I would just need to find the engine first. The Tiger will be a two tone white and orange with Hobbs from Calvin and Hobbs comic strip on the fuselage.

Those 45's, 50's and 56's bring big bucks quickly.

That sounds like a great scheme.

I checked I have a silver 50 and a 56 I don't have a 45 but the 50 would do. I have a used .80 that is very hard starting and I can't keep it running. I may pull it off the airplane if I don't donate the plane to my son's CAP unit for display. Its a SIG 1/5th scale Cub with 1940s CAP roundlets and registration number. He wants for a static display so I would leave the problem child on the airplane.

Do you know the part number for the correct washer? I thought I might look for one. What HS needle setting did the 115 like? I want to know where to start when I run it the first time. Thanks!

The correct p.n. for a prop nut and washer for a Saito FA-115 is SAI125A28. Start with the hsn 3-1/2 turns out and lean from there. Nothing special about the 115 or any Saito, I start them all from 3-1/2 turns out on the hsn.

Equally important for start up is the lsn. Close a T-Pin in the throttle barrel and open the lsn to where you can barely hear air coming through the carb while blowing through a fuel line connected to the carb. Works for every 2 or 4 stroke engine on the planet, sans the super charged engines.

I left it at the almost peak setting, 1/4 turn rich from where it is would let you start it safely, the LS is very near the ball park.

Here is Mike H's cylinder and crankcase with crankcase and cam housing having been baked at 250 for two hours. The cylinder will get baked tomorrow. I can't get the Gold rocker covers to clean up, maybe you have better set.

New piston ring, new wrist pin, new bearings, cam and gaskets.

You pulled the HS needle for shipping that was why I asked how far in it was.

Mike, I've told you many times that Dave has a dry sense of humour....I'd leave the lsn where Dave set it and wind the hsn in gently to where it is fully seated then come out 2 and a quarter turns and flick the prop. My fa115 is peaked at about one and three quarters.
ps on saito singles I always use a flexible stainless braided wire hsn needle extension because of vibration at low rpm cheers.

Dave the only rattle can VHT I've used is on Harley shotgun exhausts and as you know you just start the engine to dry it. I've used many different VHT coatings both single and 2K via spraygun and the TDS (tech data sheet) ALWAYS recommends the thinnest coating possible, typically 70 microns. Some vht rattle can colours like red and yellow have poor coverage so people tend to put too much on which leads to early failure. Nice job on the fa115 Dave, Mike's alter ego Major Von Krashenbern would be proud.

And the joke for the week is...

Mike, that FA115 plaque looks good, but you should have made it FAD 115, for FADave 115 ; )

Speaking of funny engine labels, has anyone noticed what the label on an FA60T spells?
