Jim, if you are fitting a Saito to your shoestring I'd follow Lonnies advice. If it's a two stroke you are using I'd advise you to completely block all intake holes and let it fry in it's own juices

Lonnie, I plan to do all that, I bought the foam for that. but the air inlet is tiny. because it's made for a 40 size engine.

Pete, I too would love to put a 4st in it, but if I did I would have to cut the cowl up a lot, and the cylinder head would stick out over an inch.

Jim, looks like you can trim the inlet opening a little without affecting the appearance too much. A little trimming makes a big difference in the sq. in. area. Might be ok as is with baffeling and a low pressure exit opening (s).

If the opening bothers you glue in some black screen wire, the air will pass thru but the black fools the eye..

A course screen might be ok but I wouldn't use the fine screen like that used for residential windows. That type of screen blocks a lot of airflow. Next time it's windy outside hold up one of your window screens, you'll get the idea pretty quick just how hard it is for air to pass through.

Lonnie. I flew it one whole summer without a cowl. one of the guys at the field told me with a smile that I "just had to put one on it because it didn't look good without one". LOL he was correct.

you know, when some one tells you the air intake size doesn't matter much, it's only the hot air exit that matters.. it kind-a sticks questions in your head.

Mike. only the opening's small size bothers me, it'is made for a 40 size engine, my engine is the OS 70sz Heli engine with the over size Heli carb, it should be turning around 13 grand with an APC 11x9.

That's because it's true Jim. You need a low pressure area to "suck" air out of the cowl in flight. Plenty of info available about that and easy to understand.

guys, I like this hobby foam. it's cool because it sands great with 150 grit. it would sand faster with 100 grit but the 150 gives a good finish. you can file it too but it can get a bit raggedy with a wood file.
so I am working on the ShoeString cowl and I have to fit the foam inside the cowl's airduct. this will keep the air closer to the top of the engines head, if the foam wasn't add there would be a lot of wanted air passing by the top of the head. I'l get photos when done.

thanks guys for telling about the foam!
Jim

Jim, I'm going to dig out some discarded Saito cams and maybe we can discuss normal wear, over revving wear and loose lash wear.

It was great, but cold, 51 degrees most mornings. We caught our limit of Crappie most days. In the rain sometimes. Going 55 mph in a big Lund is right chilly.

I am way behind on lawn mowing, it rained here too. I didn't get to the cams yet, maybe today.

Big block cams
Cam # 1 barely worn
Cams 2 & 3 worn out
Cams 4 & 5 like new.
A program on my Computer called One Drive will not let pictures upload to RCU.

One Drive is a back up drive in the cloud. You will have to move them to the pictures folder to upload them. I don't use One Drive I think its a pain somewhere below the belt!

One Drive must be a lot like the Amazon photo storage or Apple's iCloud. Like they take your photos and then make it difficult for you to use them. Meantime, they now have pics of you, your home, family and friends, places you have been, things you have done. Along with much information about when and where those pics were taken.

Dave,
Hope you can get those pics downloaded and posted. Would be interesting to see them.

Have you opened it photo and saved them to the computer? I usually store them on the "C" drive to solve this problem. I made sure to deactivate One Drive on my new laptop.
