Flew the Super Stearman today….
Adjusted the valves last night and thr motor ran flawlessly. Still rich on the top, but we’ll work on the tune. Response was great, started, ran and was responsive to tune, throttle and idle. What an engine!!
Will say it flew, I had some control issues mostly due to hitting self-level on my SR8 PRO. May add a tad of down trust angle as it liked to climb..
But the 125 flew it, got air borne easily, just felt soft in the air, floaty without a lot of juice. Can’t wait till the 180 shows up..

BTW, the 450 Stearman, AKA Super Stearman, has two significant upgrades over the PT17, upper and lower ailerons and a 450 HP Jr Wasp engine. Yep, animal.

good to hear you have a nice running Saito 125 for another plane LOL. the Saito 180 should turn an APC 17x8w right around 8900, I have heard a couple say they got 9000 and 9100 with 20% Nitro. .
if you want to use a wood prop and you buy a Xoar sport prop you may want to buy their 17x6 because bigger Xoar props pull a lot more air than my APC 17x8w did. my Magnum 180 4st turned that APC 17x8w at 8800 peaked and the Xoar 17x6 at 8600 peaked. surely the Saito should turn the Xoar a bit higher than that Magnum did.
BTW. my Magnum 180 turned the Xoar 17x8 Sport at 8200 peaked

Thanks for all the help. The Maiden went…. Motor was not an issue, but the stabilization had some issues. Programming four servos to respond to a two servo stabilizer produced some flutter. I had the gain high on the rudder which was also an issue. Thank god it was on a switch and I turned it off!

I just modified the FG 11 cylinder to fit in the Saito 62-B crankcase, the neck that extends down in the crankcase was 29 mm OD, it required reducing to 28.25 mm to fit into the 62-B crankcase. I rigged up a 29 MM jig for the 3 jaw chuck, slid the cylinder over it, it was a silky smooth fit, then slid the ball bearing live center into the top cooling fins with just enough pressure to turn the cylinder. It rotated perfectly true. Now all I need is an FG 11/27mm piston.

Do you know if there is a difference in compression ratios?
Heard it once said that when you get a lathe you find excuses for doing things with it.
Actually the other way around. People without them make the excuses .. Or just get someone to do it for them.

I have to say that it's very interesting how these Saitos are designed. smart too. you all know I need a 91 cylinder. well I found I could put the 100's cylinder on the 91 case with a lot of milling, the case needs to be bored-out and the 100's cylinder flange needs shortening, and the 100's piston needs 1mm milled off the top. it would work but it's just too much. now, you could put the 91 crank in the 100's case. and all that is needed is to deck the case 4mm. but it would just make it only 0.86cc (15.85cc) larger than the 91 (14.99cc) and it would weigh the same as a 100. so it's not worth the effort.

I agree, most likely a stripped gear tooth after a prop strike, but how about an overly tight tappet lash or burnt valve?
