Default Best matched airframe for Saito FA125 glow

G'day all,
I've got a spare Saito FA125 that is looking for a nice airframe....just wondering if anyone on here has some recommendations. Warbird or sprt flyer I'm not fussy.
I've already got a 125 in my H9 Christen Eagle which I love so rather than having the spare engine doing nothing I figure I may as well put it in something.
Cheers

I've overpowered a few 60 size WWll warbirds with 125's. Good times. They have all been swapped for Saito FG21 gassers, still good times.

I have over a half dozen 125s. Here are some pics of what they pull. The last, a Pitts Python, is on the build table now.

Good times, for sure!

I've converted quite a few FG-20 and even the FG-21 from gaspoline to methanol and had even better times
Of course the FA-125 is the subject.

I was sorting through some of my carb stuff and found I have a 220 carburetor and a 220 carb barrel. They are both 11 mm. All the intake unifolds I have are 10.5 mm, did the 220 intake unifold have an 11 mm ID? The carb body on the left is 10.5 mm ID.

220 large carb option.

That big bore was usually used with the adjustable case pressure supplied VIA two check valves and a needle valve.

Most people had problems from trying to use way too much pressure. Adjusted for minimal pressure the worked well.

I may have sent you one of those. I had a few here when I cleaned out much of the big Saito parts.

Just put a slight chamfer on the intake tube.
That slight mismatch is not critical.

Yes, I think I have one of the 220, "pump" backplates.

I have two sets of the Saito in/out check valves as used on the 220 big bore kit and 300 TTDP, they all leak even though two of them were NIP. Junk. Probably why some were successful using those setups and others weren't.

With the needed low cracking pressure, many valves will leak a bit, at least till pressures build up. Not all that unusual actually, unless a zero bubble check is specified.
For the intended application it isn't really essential to have zero-bubble check valves.

Not one to seek the last 100 rpm before every takeoff, never really cared to utilize the pumped system anyhow. ..... Aside from tinkering, just for curiosity sake.

They sure do a good job at pushing the waste oil down a loooooong tube though!

No man, the two sets I tried leaked so bad that they don't build or hold pressure. When the piston drops it just puffs air out of the inlet check. If I pressurize the tank with a hand pump the outlet check leaks fiercely. Anecdotally speaking, mine are junk.

Cracking pressure shouldn't pose a problem. The internal crankcase pressures, both high and low are ample. Nothing special needed.

That is quite interesting! I have used several sets and no problems at all with leakage, despite the very low differential cracking pressure.
In every instance I was able to develope far more volume/pressure than needed.
On several ocassions I was asked to help sort out pumped Saito installations. Without fail, the owners were setting the pressure far too high.

I wish the YS checks were still available. Last time I checked they weren't. The ones available on blamazon look bulky and cheap, also not specified for use with petroleum products.

Got any leads where to get decent 1/8" checks?

Sullivan offers one that should be fuel rated .

I have used Sullvan with YS engines.

Yes, a sign of the times.

To reiterate, The Saito is not a zero bubble and seriously doubt that would be desirable let alone required. The Saito is a zero pre-load, floating hard plastic flat disc, mo spring assist, minimal crack pressure.
Obviously they were not seeking a perfect seal. A limited reverse flow was probably intentional.
They work as supplied for the intended application,

Dave, how sure are we that the 220 Big Bore carb is 11mm?

I bought a "parts lot" with 4 Saito big block carbs, three are 9.5mm and one is 11mm. Wondering if that 11m carb was a Big Bore I measured my stock 220 carb and it's also 11mmm. I say "stock 220", but I got it as "bench run only" engine. I suppose the owner could have upgraded the carb but he never mentioned having done so. The engine didn't come with anyk of other upgrade items either.

Is it possible the Big Bore Kit came with a carb venturi larger than 11mm?

UPDATE: found info in this thread from Sr telemaster150. The 220 hop up kit carb is 12mm.

Do they come apart, or did you cut them open to see what's inside?

Lonnie, I don't think that the carb I pictured is for the big carb set up. I believe the big carb was 11.5 mm ID. PS, my Australian Shepherd I told you about passed away yesterday at about 4:30 AM. Nick was a household member for 15 years and is already sorely missed.

I tried unscrewing one, no joy. I feared I would crush the housings with any more pressure with the pliers.

We don't use no steenkeeng pliers on thin aluminum!

Save the pliers for your propeller flanges.

Well to be fair, they are high quality pliers.
