Just tell us your Saito problem, if that isn't an oxymoron, and we'll try to help!

Just got back from a buds shop. My fuel was 20/20 and pure syn. We poured out a quart, added a quart of methonal, and an ounce os castor. My Saito's should like the 15/16 better. If it works out, were going to do this on a regular basis. Does that mixture sound good to the Saito guru's out there ?

You lucky dog. lol Happy birthday ! Just fired up with the new fuel mix, and it is alot better all right. Lots better idle, and less smoke. Looked like I had the smoke on before. lol Headed for the site now to give it the real test. Driveway test showed a nice steady idle at 2400 rpm.

Larry, here is how I mount the IronBay on my 2.20, it will mount the same on all Saitos. It doesn't offer to move around at all, it just sits there.

Thanks for the bd wish Free.

Club Saito member numbers backlog

I went back to Bill Robison's last update of the member numbers and worked my way up most of the way to this page. I only took the names of those who requested a number. There doesn't seem to be a better way to do it and I'm sure that a lot of people are left off the list.

Ask for a number if you want one and I'll keep track of that and post numbers as the thread goes on.

Sigman started a good thing with this and named Bill as president of the club. The first list of members is post #77 on page 4 if anyone is interested in seeing how it began.

The updated list thru page 256 is:

489 Birman
490 Peter Pilot
491 Z Nar
492 Ozarksflyer
493 Rcspec
494 Eclecticant
495 C550
496 Hueb

I'll keep going and adding if I find any other requests. Then, I'll add any new names past this point to complete the updating.

In keeping with the spirit of the way Bill did things, post a message listing your Saito engines and ask for a membership number. Donations to my private modeling fund goes a long way in getting you on the list for sure. (just joking but I know Bill would have said it too)

BLW's page/post numbers may not correlate to your page/post numbers because he is a Moderator. His numbers will read high so look to lessor page/post numbers than those he has given. He and I do not have a way to be accurate with the numbers unless someone not a moderator finds the items and posts the correct numbers here.

Hello Hobbsy; Happy birthday. I hope this is Saito related;

I was trying to tune an old OS FS 40, and blew through the vent hose to prime the engine. The pressure forced a bit of old fuel back the tube which I got to taste. It tasted awefull. I'm thinking that I can taste fuel to determine it's freshness, and this fuel is stale. I couldn't get the FS 40 to fire until I put some fresh fuel into it. The fuel tank is buried in a bipe with just the two hoses showing. After the run, I flushed out the tank with methanol, but I hear about a table spoon of fuel in there that I can't get out. Thinking that the previous owner left the fuel in there and eventually the methanol evaporated leaving just the oil which eventually went rancid. Then I put fresh fuel in it, which mixed with the rancid oil, which is what I tasted.

Now I have never had this problem with a Saito (obligatory Saito content)

Hello all,
I'm a proud Saito owner, too. Currently have a 56 in a Bearcat profile plane (in need of repairs), a 72 on loan to a good friend, a 91 in a CMP P-51, a 120 in a Pacific Aero Tiger Moth 120, a 180 in an Ultra Stick 120 (old heavy style), and my newest acquisition, a brand new 200 twin (my first twin!) that I built a mahogany stand for and have on display on a bookshelf in the den (my wife moved it from the end table). I love these engines - how they sound, how economical they are in fuel burn (though that 180 will suck it up at high throttle), how easy starting they are (when you do the proper prime sequence) and other good characteristics that the other members have listed.
The only real problem I have ever had with one is the loss of compression due to something sticking in the valve train. I had one (the 91, I think) flame out on me once, and when I tried to restart it it had NO compression. I was pretty baffled and thought maybe a rocker had jumped off, but pulling the valve covers revealed no such problem. Best I can remember I just put the electric starter on it - and I HATE using one of those on a Saito - and spun it over, after which it restarted and had compression again! I have also had this happen several times after an engine sat up for several months and wouldn't generate any compression 'till I put the starter to it. I can't remember how many of the motors this has happend on, but I know it's happened more than once on the 91. After starting it, though, no problem.
The only thing I really don't like about them is how the muffler always gets stained up so badly. I've been thinking about painting one with some hi-temp black, but I figure the heat/oil/fuel combo will probably remove it or make it streak down the side of the plane. So I just accept it, knowing that if I want to make it look good again, a hot antifreeze bath will do the trick.
All this aside, I'd like to join this august group - I've been lurking long enough!!
Dave

The R/C Gods have smiled on me and I am now the proud owner of Saito 220, that I have installed on H9's 150 P51. Still have not had a chance to fuel it up and start the break in on it due to health issues. I plan on using a 18-8 prop for breaking period but still undecided for the prop for actual flight. Don't want to do the Fly /SWAP PROP/ FLY / SWAP PROP. Anyone have this engine plane comb with suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
