What does one do to become a member of Club Saito??

How are the numbers designated??

I've been trying to become part of this exclusive institution for some time now.....what does it take?
I think everyone agrees that you need to own a Saito.

I own 5 Saitos....

1 .82, 2 .91s, a 1.00 and a 1.20....

Doesn't that qualify as Saito ownership? Or must I own stock in the corporation?

w8ye,

Thanks for the fast response, you are correct it is just an older FA-120. I don't believe that the idle being set too low is the issue, as when throttling down quickly one doesn't even have to pull back all the way on the stick for the problem to occur. It seems to be more a factor of how quickly the throttle cut rather than how far it is cut. I had one friend suggest that perhaps I am running too rich and that when throttling back rapidly it floods the engine and cools the glow plug and then it kills. That does sound reasonable to me, but wondering if that is the case would I be better off leaning the mid-range disc on my carb, or turning out the low speed (air-bleed) screw? Basically, what would the proper procedure be to rectify my problem?

Sounds like you need to adjust your midrange disc. Try leaning it a bit and see if it improves.

I read someone's item on Ebay claim that the Saito 100 is actually 1.10 cubic inches.
Horizon site also states: Displacement:1.10 cu in (17.10 cc)

But, mathematically: 17.1 cm³ = 1.04350 in³

Obviously Saito knows this, or they'd have called it a 110 and never released the 115.

I think Jim did the nimbers and the 1.00 is really a 1.04, he can correct if I'm wrong, stretching occurs quite often however the MDS 1.48 is actually a 1.52, go figure. I guess MDS loved those numbers ending in 8.

Saito Friends, I did some horse trading in the last couple of days, I sold my Saito TS90 and then found an older NIB Saito 1.00 twin. This one was $449.00 so I got it for the old price. It has a glow plug wrench among the tools. The flex pipes have much larger flutes than the current ones. They will only be on there until I get a couple of more TurboHeaders. The carbs are metered with airbleed trims, the barrels do not move in and out.

I have one just like that. I traded out the cam boxes for the current style on mine and put the air pump in the drawer.

Thanks Jim, I noticed that the newest version did not appear to have the pump, but for $150.00 I accepted the pump. Did you just change the right cam box? Thanks

Can anyone tell me the size of the bolt that holds the jug down on an FA 82a? I lost one and need to find a replacement.

While we're researching nut and/or bolt sizes, I have a Saito .30 (with rocker covers). The manuals I've read say that the crankshaft threading is 1/4 28. Dave Brown says it's 6mmX1. Neither fits!! Something as simple as finding the right prop adapter for an aluminum spinner shouldn't be this hard! Does anyone have another (or better) idea as to what I need?
And as long as I'm here, that engine, together with an open rocker .30, two .45's, a 65, an .80, and a 1.00 should qualify for a club member #? Maybe??

I changed both boxes so they would look alike. The current boxes do not have the boss for the air pump

Watch the left cam. you have to use the line instead of the dot.

Fellow SAITO enthusiasts,
I have a bit of a dilemma, with my FA-91s. I've tried a couple of different tuning techniques, from this thread. But, I still can't get the top end over about 8800 rpm. I'm using a 14X6 prop, as this is in my 8lb 8oz pattern plane. I had 2 dead stick landings at the last contest, so I removed the VP-20 pump. But, she still won't tune well enough. I have since changed spraybar and HSN. While trying to tune the engine, I can turn the LSN in all the way, at approximately 2500 rpm idle, and it won't stop running. If I try lowering the idle speed it dies.
Also, I have recently readjusted the valve lash to .004mm.
Am I missing a possible air leak somewhere, or what? this is driving me crazy(er).

Thanks, gang,
EJ

There may be something wrong with your LSN

Did you get the notch in the spray bar towards the intake manifold?

Yep. In fact, I just double checked.

You know , if you stop and think about it, calling the Low Speed adjustment a needle is incorrect. It's actually a tube that extends over the "notch" in the spraybar. What could possibly go wrong with the LSN? There is nothing that rubs against anything there.

If your spray bar is too small or the low speed tube too large you will get the results you are experiencing

CD, it is 7x1, the little prop nut should be available from Horizon, it came with the GK. The cylinder on my older one is black because I loaned it to Wuilliam Robison for his "Saito Notes" above. He made the cylinder black as a little joke. It's a special treasure now. One other specail treasure is an ASP 1.08 RedHead, a gift from w8ye.

CD, the Saito parts designation for the .30 is MM, here is alink to the prop nut.

Hobbsy, thanks a bunch! Only other thing is where did you find a gadget like a Screw Chek'r? I'm pretty sure that would be a nice thing to have around.
