The 45 MKII is the only 45 I've seen. They were rather common in the USA/Canada. Horizon never carried the 45S. The 45 MKI & MKII were sold by Indy RC before Horizon bought them.

The main differences beside bore and stroke with current available parts is that the back plate and carb body are designed different. The other difference is the camshaft/cam cover, pushrods & tubes.

Yes, I have both engines and can confirm the numerous differences. Even the cranks are slightly different (larger threaded section on the 45S - from memory). The back cover, carb, intake tube, pushrods/tubes/seals, camshaft/cam cover, and crank are all different. I mistakenly tried to assemble one engine from both engines, quickly finding out that some things wouldn't fit (pushrods mostly).

Whilst both have different gasket sets, only the intake tube and pushrod area really differed (at least enough that I could tell).

I'm about to pull the 45S and swap it for the 45MkII. I may take some side by side pics to post here.

I will do that soon as I need to swap the engines in my Eindecker. So while they are both out I can take the pics.

Winglift, I might be out of line here but you said that the top of your tank is now level with the carb. I was always under the impression that the centerline should be even with the carb (i.e., spraybar) or 1/4'' below.

Can someone set me straight on that? Is it different for 4S engines than it is for 2S?

Or is the tank now set that low to prevent siphoning?

Bob
Bob, According to a recent article in FlyRC (Aug 2010) on the Saito engines FA-72 and FA-82 he said that "you should not mount the fuel tank above the fuel inlet on the carburetor." and I went ahead and did that for this engine since I have been having problems in that area. I called Horizon about my particular problem and they did tell me that the routing of the fuel lines will not make any difference unless they are extremely long. They recommended that I send the engine in for analysis. As far as 4S or 2S, I would think it would be the same, ie both the 2S & 4S carb demands fuel the same.

Does anyone have a method of indexing the cam and crankshaft on the Saito 100 when reassembling? Photos? I can set the dot at 6 oclock on the cam, but not sure if it stays there when lowering it into the case. The same for the crankshaft which needs to be at 12 oclock, not sure if it stays in position when assembling the cam.

Look back in the thread, there is a hole in the cam that you can put a drill with a bit of plastic pushrod around it in one of the follower holes and that will hold it in time as you put it in the engine. Still need the crank at TDC.

You can just use the small end of a pushrod

Thanks. I should have thought of that. Do you just eyeball the crank?

It is easy if you take out the glowplug and use a toothpick to find TDC.

Hi Bill, I would like to get a copy of the material you mentioned here. I just picked up a 100 FA, sold for parts as it was crashed, that looks complete and fixable. The pushrods are bent and the high speed needle bent as well.
I also have a 120 in a Tiger Moth that will need the bearings replaced. The two 45s are still OK. So any information that you could provide on the correct process to pull the crank and assembly would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks in advance. Gerry [email protected]

Unfortunately that did not work as the cam followers prevented that. Without a sure way to lock it in place, I just rotated it to 6 oclock and gently lowered it and hope for the best.

Others have posted that an exacto blade or a piece of plastic (credit card) could be used to hold the cam gear in position as the cam cover is lowered onto the crankcase. I can see that a credit card with a U channel that bridges opposite cam gear teeth would hold them and then be pulled out after mesh is made.

Ok I know this might be a silly question, I currently am running a OS 55ax 2 stroke in a gp Cap 580, I am awaiting a 5 year old saito 80 gk that I picked up used, Is this engine more powerfull than my 55? On the websites the 55 is rated at 1.7hp @ 16000, The saito is rated @ 1.3? Would someone mind explaining?
