RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi Ernie, I've only had it about 5 days, a friend passed it along to me, it was brand new and unrun. It's now been run 60 minutes using my 10 minutes at each 1,000 rpm interval starting at the 10 minutes real rich run. It required the glow driver for the 4,000 and 5,000 rpm runs. After the 6,000 rpm run, (30 min.) I topped off the 16oz tank, leaned the LS needle one full turn, leaving it still too rich but safe. The only time I stop an engine during break in is to to refill the tank. It guzzled down 12oz of fuel in the first 30 minutes, only about 8oz during the last 30 minutes, not bad considering it was running it ran 7,000, 8,000 and 9,000 for each of the last 10 minute runs. Used my cell phone, (electronic leash), as a watch. If I can, I want to run it with a new style cast muffler and pipe and of course a TurboHeader. It had pretty mushy compression at first, now its ABC like, if you flip it slowly you better have your finger out of the way when it goes over TDC. I've owned every Saito single except for the .65 and the 1.80. I have sold off about 75% of my engines trying to recover from taking care of our daughter when she had her stroke. In regards to her we've been really blessed, she is back with her husband, here left leg is a little draggy and she will never be quite as quick witted as she was but she's doing well.

I can't speak to a Saito 50 but I've run a 12x6 and a 13x5 on a Saito 56. If you don't get any other replies, that could be a good starting point for your .50.
The Saito 56 and 13x5 haul my 7-1/2 lb J-3 Cub around in a scale-like fashion.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Saito 50
for Duration (LER) I use anything from a 10 x 6 to a 13 x6 (anything from 20 to 40% nitro) and these are specialist props usually Bolly carbon fibre
For Texaco (economy run) I use anything from an 11 x 6 to a 14 x 8, usually an APC but I have used wood (on a new engine) and Master Airscrew or Graupner
Good engine I guard my with an attack dog but the that goes for all my Saitos.

Good report Hobbsy, thanks and great that your daughter has improved so much. Now..... when did they last make the Saito 65? Just curious, thanks,

Hobbsy you will find that Bolly 13.5 x 6 works a treat. I use one on the duration version of my Lanzo Bomber that is Saito 65 powered. I also use up to 40% nitro at the same time. I had Ed B make me some needle point 13.5 x 6 and x 6.5 "s for the YS 63 and my only problem is I can't get any more though I hear some enterprising people "out there" are actually making clones.

Old Fart what are you going to put the 57 in. Saw a car the other day with some of those family stickers on it. This one had a fisheerman and a horse. Then I read what that meant in the local rag, maybe you could consider that one (if you are brave)

Regarding the Saito 50 I have used the Master Airscrew 11X7.5 with great success.

I used an APC 12x6 on my Saito .50. It was a very good match for my Goldberg Cub and my Florio Stunt Wagon.

Here are the weights of three Saitos, a new/old .65, very early high compression .80 and a blue and white box .80. The .65 is always said to be heavy, it certainly is.
Picture #1 is the .65
Picture #2 is old GK
Picture #3 is mid aged .80
Picture #4 is velocity stack made using the choke retainer plate and piece of wind chime tube.
I put the same cast muffler on each and the same prop washer and nut, the GK lacks a vent tube but I ain't doin this over for that.[8D]
PS, my arm has come a long way, I have pushed hard to get this passed me.

That's a nice looking velocity stack to have been home made
There's a lot of hair on that arm. I just have a little fuzz on my arms anymore

Yeah, Geri teases me about being a Silver Backed Goriller, those weather beaten windchimes do come in handy, sort of a recycle thing. The length is just arbitrary, no thought and no measuring. This is the one I made my old FA40, its probably too long but I don't know how you'd figure that out. On 10 June I'll find out how strong the Dr. is going to allow that arm to be. I hope he doesn't expect me to be a wimp.

Thanks Hugh, you see the engine on the right where I hacked the, "airhorn" off at a 45 degree angle, this was so I could put the FA .40 right up against the firewall on my old RCM 40. Using a Graupner 12x5 the .40 flew it just fine. Only problem was it took three flights to use up a tank of fuel. I decided to make it more normal with a velocity stack.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ernie, the left engine was called the FA .45S High Cam, Jim can correct if I got the nomenclature wrong. The LS needle on those was short and had a steep angle so the sweet spot was narrow and easy to miss. Tiny adjustments were the rule of the day.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Just obtained a still new Saito 56. Unfortunately it did not come with any exhaust. I figured I had something that would fit, but apparently the 45, 50 and 56 are a different size muffler thread. 10x1mm. I was looking on Horizon site to buy something, but stumbled across this item:
Muffler Adaptor Nut:KK by Saito Engines (SAI170R3130)
It fits the 170R, which I presume has the 10x1mm exhaust threads. My question is what does it do? Allow 12x1mm muffler threads to be used?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ernie, the weak part in those was the little tab that is cast on the back of the engine, it engages a slotted/grooved tab on the carb. I t was known to break in a crash, I never broke either on mine though
