smkrcflyer, can you tell us if there were any dimensional differences between the original and new bearing? Was it the front or rear bearing?

Orthobird, it sounds like the engine may be overheating. Check to make sure you have good airflow over the head and cylinder. One other thing to ask is if you refueled it before the second flight. If so one other place to look is in the fuel pickup. If it has a pinhole in the line or the clunk is not dropping to the lowest level you may be sucking air. Were you flying straight and level when the engine cuts out?

Ortho,

Your engine is just broken in to the point to fly. It will keep breaking in for another gallon or two. Getting the engine tuned pretty close is important.

Where can I get Saito bearings? I have a 82A that needs a rear bearing, so I might as well go for both of them at once.

Horizon Hobby is out of the front, RC Bearings is out of both, and Boca Bearings wants $23 for a set of "Rubber Seal RC Engine Bearings".

I'd rather stick with either original stock or RC Bearingsl. I'm not sure if I am comfortable with a rubber sealed bearing inside the engine (i.e., the rear bearing). I know that they're supposed to be lubed for life but I don't have any experience with this type of bearing in an RC engine.

Who else might have Saito bearings and other parts for sale?

ok, thanks, tomorrow, i will take the revolver again to fly, and i will turn the HSN 1 full turn out, to make it richer, that way, once up in air, if it leans out, it will not lose power. does this sound reasonable?

Ortho, do you have access to a tachometer? It's best to tune and not look for a certain amount of turning the needle valves. The approach should be to tune the high speed to the highest rpm it will produce. This is the peak. For a new engine, setting the rpm 300-500 rpm richer from peak is the right way to tune. A 4 stroke is different but you'll love it soon enough.

ok blw, i will do just that tomorrow. so i will turn it on, then turn needle til i get max rpm, then i will turn needle out so rpm drops 300 to 500. i will do it and tell you how it goes. thank you.

You can remove the seals from your bearings to promote lubricant flow. Ileave them in the front bearing and remove them from the rear one.

N1EDM, the rear should be a 6902 OPEN bearing, not rubber sealed or shielded. That way it will get lube and allow the space between the bearings to breath, (also lubing the cam and valvetrain). If the engine case vent is mounted below the cam then you need to equalize pressure to that area anyway.

The front is listed as an R6-2RS, which is rubber sealed, but I recommend removing the inner seal to allow it also to get lube. The seals pop out easily with a straight pin under the outer edge.

From my own experience shielded or sealed bearings are wider than non-sealed or shielded. If you opt for one not open you will find the crank does not fit correctly.

Hi Cougar,

I will agree that most engines have a rear, open bearing. But the stock bearing that came out of the 82 is shielded anyway (not sealed) so the engineers at Saito must have had their reasons.

Also, Boca recommends these rubber bearings specifically for the 82. They're a reliable source and this is a common engine, so there must be a reason for that too. Not trying to start a side debate here, just curious. I'll double check the specs on the Boca bearings being offered but I am confident that they're the same dimensions...

I'm just trying to find an alternate dealer who stocks these bearings other than HH, RCBearings and Boca.

BLW & Hobbsy, what is your opinion about those Rubber Seal bearings that they offer?

I don't have a Purvis Bearing local warehouse but I do have one nearby under another name that someone reminded me of this morning. I'll try them tomorrow.

If not, I'll go to Boca but I'd still like to know why Boca recommends the rubber shielded bearings when no one else does...

today was flight number 2 for the saito 125. much better than last week. the engine never stalled. it flwe for 10 minutes. engine was way underpowered, probably too rich, my tach was not working. anyways, thanks to you all for the advice. i appreciate everyone that helped me.

The hobby shop should have a few different size fittings. JBWeld it in there if necessary and you'll be set.

A good morning here in FNQ that has just got better.  2 x Beavers (DH type) float planes flying the circuit with a P3 and a C130.  The sound of road engines plus the roar of the Allison 501 / what ever the military version is great to wake up enough to inspire one to go committ aviation.  Been a bit difficult as the temperature has dropped to 12 degrees centigrade o/nite lately.

On page 907 i was asking questions about the intake o-ring on a .50 well i got to fly it last night... big difference it now runs like it should so THANKS again guys.... also add me to the satio club i own a .30,2 .50s,.91,and a 1.50.....

I would like to join this club. I am now the proud owner of a GP PT-17 Stearman with a Saito 1.80 Golden Knight under the cowl.
I have never owned a Saito before and I purchased this one right as I was in a mass removal of all glow engines! Some deals you just cannot pass up!

Any input, ideas, thoughts or things you think I should know about on this Saito 1.80 would be appreciated.

(The plumbing on this was in place when I purchased it. She has since been rewired, re-servo'd and replumbed!)

I use the kit white nylon mount and stainless allen head self tappers that was supplied with the mew gull for my 220 which is inverted

I use the Dave Brown one piece nylon motor mounts on my 180s bit I also use well nuts in the firewall for vibration isolation. That takes a lot of (vibration) stress off the mount as well as the airframe.

I too would be a bit leary of the 2 piece adjustable nylon mounts like the one pictured.
