The engine will be used on a 1/4 scale super cub that I'm going to redo this winter.

Hey guys, sorry to hijack, but I didn't find any other remotely active thread to ask this, but I have a small milk crate full of O.S. engines (2 stroke and 4 stroke) and I am trying to find out what distinguishing marks to look for to help identify them? I'm not new to Nitro, and I'm not new to planes, but I am new to Nitro Planes (if that makes sense) and I recently got a small SUV full of planes, motors, a few TX's and a bunch of parts. Trying to determine what is worth keeping/selling/trashing/giving away.

O.S. FSa-72II Airplane Engine w/F-5030 Silencer | TowerHobbies.com
This is a new or recent release by OS Engines, a .72a II, a little pricey but probably a gem. I have the .56 version.

I have a 56a, 2-72a's, 3-81a's, 3-110a's and love them. I can't understand why the 72a was discontinued to make room for the 72a II and the 100-130 dollar price increase. It has a black valve cover and a new head, but $100 more? Seems that every time they bring out an engine the price goes up so much. The asking $480 price is only $20 short of their 155a pumped engine!

I try to not question why people do things, I recently bought a LASER 1.00 simply because I wanted one. Others will do the same with the OS 72 II, I'm sure. Some will think they're crazy but I won't be one of them because at 75 years old I still pull stunts like that.

Everyone knows I'm not a fan of OS engines.. If I was a total hater, I'd just run it on some RC car fuel dead lean and let her melt down. But I'm not doing that. I'm doing some experiments to not only see what gains can be had, but also to test durability in the most unconventional manner possible. My hypothesis is the liner will peel at some point, but we will put that to the test. My test fuel has no synthetic oil in it (it seems to be castor oil tends to prolong the inevitable) and the nitro content is comparable to what many folks use in these engines. So if it survives my modifications, then we will test some more exotic fuels and tuning aids.
The fanboys will have a field day, but it's all in good fun. I can use a good laugh once in awhile. Besides... How often do you see an LA engine on a tuned pipe? I'm gonna try it.

Stop buying them......give the ones that you have to a kid or a newcomer. Just because "The Planet" uses OS Engines and has powered their models OR LEARNED TO FLY AN RC AIRPLANE using an OS engine doesn't mean they should be subjected to torture.....
poor little LA-25......
A much more satisfying test would be a video of you tapping the letters OS with a ball peen hammer on your forehead and measuring the the actual lump rise after each repetition.....(Smiles) Now THAT would be fun to watch.....

John, I have two of those little OS LA .25's, tough little engines and pull a Sig LT 25 like nobodies business. They are very "nomical" on fuel.

We had LA .25 racing and there was a 100 mile race every year. 1,400 laps. I am pretty sure they did not need new plating every race. This year it has been changed to LA .15 races with different planes, but there was a .25 race anyway from popular demand. I would get pretty dizzy and exhausted after the 160 lap final. There is a speed event on the west coast that is fairly popular. I am not too sure, but think they are at about 100 mph which isn't too bad for a beginners sport engine. For my money I would get the blue head ASP/Magnum, but I do have a few swap meet LA .25s that perform well. LA .10s, .15s, .40,s and .46s too.

The motivation for my LA25 modifications was spurred by this:
Part I: Flying Lines: Reworking the O.S. LA .25 for Northwest B Proto Speed

Gotta boogie till you bust. Should go real fast with a clean RC plane and a high pitch prop. That was the reference I was thinking of. I wouldn't go with the sub piston induction. A pipe maybe, and higher exh timing. Maybe 180 degrees after shimming the liner and probably grinding or milling the exh port to get that. The closing time on the crank should be 60 degrees. Is it missing the boost port? Without going downstairs, I think there are just two bypasses.

I figured when I am ready to test the addition of a boost port, I'd fit a piston and liner from a .25 FSR since I have a spare set - I put a new piston and liner set into my 25 FSR. The port size/shape and timing is virtually the same and the FSR set fits the LA perfectly. The larger carb from the FSR fits the LA as well. So with improved breathing and (later on) timing profile, it should run a fair bit stronger.

So you'll grind the path for the boost port in the liner, or the case? Really the FSR is a better candidate, but that would be too easy I guess. More fun trying to get the lipstick on the pig.

Yes, I'll cut a Boost channel into the crankcase. The crankcase is cast as if they intended to have a boost port, but never machined it in.
