Default Glow Plug came apart on OS 1.08 seized

I just had a glow plug come apart this morning while flying my Edge with an OS1.08. The insides of the glow plug dropped out into the engine and siezed the piston. After pulling the head the piston and head is spattered with the insides of the glow plug. I have never had this happen or even heard about a glow plug comming apart in 35 years around this hobby. Does any one know where to get a piston, ring, and crank with bearings for an OS 1.08 FSR!

I don`t know were to get those parts, but I`m pretty sure the cost will not be far from buying a new engine. Price on 120 ax is quite fair

If these Guys can't get you the parts, you probably won't find them.

They have two other sources as well.

Tower still have parts in stock even though the engine is discontinued:

Used ones seem to come up for sale regularly...

I had that happen to me about 7 years ago. Had a new TT 61pro and a Tower plug. The idle bar broke off and ground the heck out of that piston. I sent the engine and plug to Hobby Services. I called up Hobby Services and told them send me a new engine since it was a defective plug. They did.

We originally thought it was a bad bearing with the rattling noise it made

Asmund, do you know if a 1.20 will drop into the same mount as the 1.08, it's beginning to look like if I can find the parts I will need a knight's randsom to return it to the sky!

It looks like the width to the mounting holes is the same, but the distance front to rear of the holes is a bit different.

ericrcpilot, thanks for the charts, I'm using the H9 motor mount with the slotted bolt holes so front to back will not be a problem.

I have had it happen with a $250.00 45,000 RPM modified Rossi .12 car engine, and I am sorry to report it was a P7 OS turbo plug. It cost me a piston and sleeve. The hole element also dropped and got caught on one of the nine ports. I can say that I have never had it happen in a plane though. I useally change the plugs in my planes every spring for security.

I don't know what the plug is, it is a used motor and the plug was in it when bought. After looking at the OS1.20 as a possible replacement I see that the rpm is down at 9000 not the usual 15-16000, that will change the whole prop picture. I pulled the 1.08 out took, it apart and cleaned up the head and the piston, the crank looks good I can't feel any scoring on the cylinder wall so I may get lucky. I put the motor back in the plane and ran it, the vibration seems to be the same as before so I will try it in the air. I think I will still look for a replacement as I may be wrong on the state of the 1.08.

If the plug is too hot, of low quality or very old it will eventually breake and scratch the cylinder wall and the piston.
Look at the piston ring and the sleeve and if you dont find any very deep scratches then there is no damage[sm=thumbup.gif]

I flew the 1.08 yesterday, 1/2 way through the second flight the motor seized again only this time the piston is froze to the wall. The wall must have been scored and I didn't pick it up while checking the wall during tear down, Now the question is, what do I replace it with, is it time to go 4 stroke?

Are you sure that a ball bearing hasn't started flaking off it outer skin on it's way to total destruction?

I had a engine do that to me, first the glo plug got beaten up and spit out. Put in another plug, then a bigger flake of bearing went up & down with the piston to take all the fun away.

With a 4 stroke you'll have torque on your side, plenty of power with a steeper pitched prop.

I use 15% Byron or Omega fuel and have several OS motors that have been around a long time including a ST.60 blue head that has been running since 1972, it's not my first rodeo.

I was just wondering. It's not easy to seize a ringed engine, but it can be done.
I got a new can of fuel one time....5% K&B fuel to break-in a new Super Tiger
.45 ABC engine....the fuel was defective. Every time I tried to peak the engine
it would seize right before it peaked. I put some of my own mixed fuel in it,
and it ran perfect....it was 15% oil....1/3 castor and 2/3 Klotz, with 15%
nitro. That was my first ringless engine. Is is possible to get bad fuel. []

A friend of mine seized up one of my .61 K&B's one time. He put an out of
balance plastic spinner on the engine....the vibration caused the low speed
needle to screw itself "in" (lean)....it over heated and siezed....big time.

OS motors have always been tough, take lean runs etc. but this one was subjected to the guts of a glow plug, no engine will stand up, especially at full throttle. I understand the fuel potential but when the motor seized I was 1/2 way through a gallon. The 1.08 has since been replaced with a Saito 1.25, I'm new to the 4 stroke scene so here we go for another ride.
