Magnum 91 XLS and piston defect?
Hello,
Before to start breaking my engine, I inspected the inside for foreign particles and I found a defect on the piston. I tried to take a few pictures of it. Do you think I can use it as is or do I need to contact hobbypeople for warranty work?
Thanks,
Le fou

Would send that one back as it is an ABC engine and a perfect fit between the piston and sleeve is what makes that engine so powerful. I also have one that I am getting ready to send back.

I doubt if it would give you any trouble. That area of the piston does not contact the cylinder wall anyway.
The very top edge of the piston is relieved on most ABC type engines as you can see in the pictures and does not contribute to the piston/cylinder seal.
If you are anxious to use the engine, go ahead and use it.
If you don't mind waiting a few weeks send it back?

You may have voided the warranty already by disassembling the engine. However,
Magnum Engines is one of the most generous of the engine manufacturers. They
will most likely take care of the problem nonetheless.
Like W8YE said, if you are in a hurry, go ahead and run the engine and see how it
performs....if not, send it in for warranty. Personally, I would send it in....that groove
in the side of the piston shouldn't be there.
FBD.

Oops, I hit the send button before I wrote anything!
I agree with Jim and Dave. I'd go ahead and use the engine as long as the liner is okay (no scars, scratches or mars).
Guys, if you have a problem with a new engine, DO NOT DISASSEMBLE IT! And especially do not post photos of it being disassembled on RCU! The importers monitor this group fairly closely. 'Nuff said.
As Dave indicated, the folks doing repairs for Hobby People/Magnum are good people, but even they have limits (I said the last part).

Hello,
Thank you for the inputs. I believe that people that practise this hobby are able to dissasemble an engine like removing a piston from its lining... I always inspect my engines since I had a bad experience in the past. If anything, I save the manufacturer money by finding problems early before running the engine. If the manufacturer tries to void the warranty because I inspected the engine, it is just an excuse. I once returned a Towerhobby engine after having break in the engine and found it to be defective (piston/lining) - they replaced the part w/o any problems. I hope that Hobby people/Magnum will have the same attitude.
Thanks,
Le fou

Le Fou, unfortunately, most modelers in this hobby are NOT capable of competently disassembling and reassembling their engines. Besides, it does void the warranty in most cases.
You do as you please, but while an engine is under warranty, it is not my job to "fix" it. It is the importers job.
