Carosel43,
I hate extra parts!

I may be wrong, but I'm assuming you used an aftermarket master rod bearing in the previous fixes. If that is correct, than something is not right within the engine separate from defective bearings. Do you agree?

We were playing cricket? I care so little about it I didn't really know! lol

As for the bearing it was a new one and sadly I threw out the old one, I knew I should have kept it! anyway I think the problem is that the crank pin is undersize and so there is a small amount of movement. This turns into an audible rattle when the engine is running and I think this is what did the bearing in. Sadly there is no fix for this problem short of a new crank and to be honest I am tired of throwing money at this engine. I will get another bearing and put it back together but honestly its days are seriously numbered now.

Can't you get some sort of sleeve the correct o/d, then maybe machine the crank pin undersize until the sleeve fits over?

Oh... hang a minute - the crank pin would need one of those weird-arsed offset lathe thingies to machine a perfect diameter, right?

:O thanks Rev, do you just so happen to have a supply of radial parts floating about??

And BJ I did think about fixing the pin but its probably undersize by less than a thou (in truth its probably a few tenths) so a sleeve is no good. Also as the pin is hardened, or at least as close as anything Chinese gets to hardened, it will likely be a pain to machine it, not to mention the fact that it would weaken the pin. add to that the pain in the butt that setting up the 4 jaw chuck would be.....yea I don't fancy that plan, new bearing, put it together and run it until it explodes again!

Yep, I do have the one or other odd part in a box called "FS400 Spares".

I bought a new one for mine and got the second one at half price so no worries. Just returning a favour (Sleevenut)

"This turns into an audible rattle when the engine is running...."

Probably what my Saito 1.80 sounded like this morning. New bearings are in order for the 1.80.

Bugger it - I'm off Slope Soaring in the morning.

No pins, no bearings, no motor-shtitting-itself noises.

No fuels to mix. No oil daggies all over my fewz.

No glow-drivers... 32 servos... dual-double qaudruple anything to worry about.

Just the roar of the Ocean in a 30knt+ wind, and the sound of a sreaming wing to contend with.

Brilliant...

What can possibly go wrong ???

BJ

retransit - the rattle is like a clattering sound that's very obvious when the engine is warm. It sounds like the engine is knocking but its not.

And Rev you don't owe me for the sleeve nut so don't worry about that.

BJ...You could fall off the cliff...that would be bad

You sure you haven't got a Misubishi diesel ?? ~S~

Re falling off a cliff: some would say that that's not such a bad thing.... LoL

I think it's because the throttle jockey has a lead shoe (thumb?) and can't keep the rev's down!

Don't you try keeping the REV down :P

@Caro: Spent 15 Minutes in the line in front of the post office teller last night thinking about the laser 360 that doesn't fit in the ESM Zero
Have to go with the DLA56 there... Anyways, bearing is on its way.

Putting the Laser in the Wedell Williams now and the FS400 is going back into the Stearman when it finishes. Spent some time painting it
Currently working on the firewall and a small clamshell.

I can actually relate to that... although its not the sea breeze I am looking for but the mountain "foehn" winds...

Cant keep the revs down? pff. More revs engine room!!!

Anyway, Rev, I am surprised to hear the laser wont fit the zero, its a shame you do not still have the 300v as the petrol will make a nasty noise

And while your flying site looks super tasty to me, ours is not half bad. The pic below was taken this evening and shows my newest creation. a little baby Nieuport 17 with a very old saito 45 in the nose.

cheers guys. I am pretty happy with the model. Its a full kit in the old fashioned sense and I only started it at the beginning of july. With a 52'' span it will fit in the car in one piece which is really handy and its lovely to fly. Its a bit of a nightmare to land as the tail tries to overtake the front end the moment the wheels touch. The same is true on takeoff. But whatever, its a lot of fun and I hope to spend many hours puttering slowly around the sky with my friends Se5a in close company

I can't wait for the Fall. I'm fed up with the heat. Every summer is just misery. I am a prisoner of the heat. I do not feel like working on anything during the long miserable summer we have here in the San Fernando Valley. I won't be doing anything to my engine until October.

I feel the same here in Florida. Must be our age. I'm contemplating moving.
