RE: Club Thunder Tiger?????
Hey guys, just got a pro .46, I have been flying electrics for about 3 years now. I just recently decided I liked the smell of castor oil and the buzz of an engine a little more than foam and humming. I have a few props and glow plugs but still need a few other things. One of which is a spinner, but how do I know what one to get. My plane is a goldberg tiger 2. It is a little tail heavy so i thought i'd like to find a heavier spinner. So my questions are, what spinner should i get, and will a heavier spinner change the performance of the engine.
I'm in a little town up north where there is only one person i know who flies, but he only flies electric planes. And the nearest hobby shop is 1.5 hour away.
Thanks, Justin

Instead of a spinner, you can order a chromed brass safety nut:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXK243&P=0
You can tighten this onto your engine's crankshaft (1/4" 28 threads per inch is the correct size for the .46 Pro) and "snug it up" against your prop nut and washer. They may not look as nice as a plastic spinner, but they'll provide some of the extra weight you want and they're much easier to remove if you need to change your propeller.
I find that plastic spinners tend to get chewed up and disfigured by electric starters easily and that removing and replacing them when changine props at the field is a bit of a pain. Dubro plastic spinners come with hex head bolts instead of phillips-head machine screws, so they're a little more reliable when changing a prop.
All things considered, I am really starting to prefer spinner nuts rather than plastic spinners. The aluminum spinner nuts are available for when you want to use a spinner nut but you don't need the extra weight provided by a chromed brass nut.

When I started with glow I used the supplied plastic spinners. It seems I always had trouble with them breaking or looking like crap after a few months of flying. If you really want a no fuss spinner solution that will last for years go with an aluminum spinner from a company like Tru Turn. Yes, they're a little pricey but they last forever and are very well balanced out of the box.

Now boys. Be nice to the non Thunder Tiger people. I myself have a lot of different engines and they each have their own attributes . Just got a NIB K&B .28 Sportster today and it is totally sweet!!

RE: Club Thunder Tiger?????
I know you guys are talking about plane motors but here's my story. My TT50HeliPro in a Raptor 50 has performed beautifully on my standard fuel (20%Nitro + 23%LV Synth), after 65 Litres (17 US Gal) I installed a new piston ring and rear bearing. Now has consumed over 80 Litres (21 US Gal) and is as good as a new one ... in fact probably better because now that we know each other so well it starts easily and never needs any fiddling with the needle. These motors are fantastic! I used to have a TT15 and TT20 28 years ago and they were not very good.

RE: Club Thunder Tiger?????
Hey Guys, thanks for the help. But i was wondering if it was possible to put one of the heavier spinner nuts inside a spinner. If so, how do I know what spinner to get? My tiger 2 was supposed to come with one but seamed to be missing it in the package.

RE: Club Thunder Tiger?????
If you put a heavier spinner nut inside the spinner, it could help with the static balance, but it may give problems when the engine is running. I think it was Clarence Lee who discussed this (but am not sure). I believe that his point was that all that extra rotating mass up front could make the engine become a gyroscope, putting extra stresses on the motor mounts as well as making the airplane harder to turn.
Has anyone else ever heard this discussion? I know that it came from somewhere...

Gyroscopic torque effect was a major problem with the early radial engines. A major problem for the Sopwith Camel from what I have been told.

RE: Club Thunder Tiger?????
It makes no sense to put extra weight on your engine's spinner or prop-shaft.
Just bolt it under the engine mount.
If you *do* put the weight on the spinner or propshaft, it will (as others have pointed out) act like a big gyroscope. This will not only have the potential to mess up your plane's handling but will put massive stress on the bearings, crankshaft and engine mount.
The rotating mass should be kept as low as possible.

RE: Club Thunder Tiger?????
yah, I was wondering if the heavier weight would effect anything. Well I dont have everything that i need yet, battery, Rx, fuel tubing, filter, and a few other misc. equipment. so maybe it'll balance better with everything inside. So ill skip the nut for now and just get a spinner. Are there any sugestions for spinners? If so tell me. Thanks.

Count me in. TT all the way. Love the underdog
I am running in a F-75s on my Sig SE. Heaps of compression. Great sound. Love it!!!!!!!
Looking to get a GP61 for my 46 size P-40. I wanna go fast with this one. Is the Mac's muffler worth considering with a 12x6 3 blade??
