ST G61 W/new Bowman ring
I just bench ran it,ran it RITCH with castor. varried the speed,ritch/leaner/ritcher,one 11oz tank (dang rain)
it idles smooth and low.
I removed the head after the run,looks good,ring is shiney,no scoring,smooth
my ? is, does the compression get better ?
this is my first ringed 2 stroke, the 4 strokes that I have(ASP.80,Saito fa50) seem to have a LOT more compression.
I scuffed the bore with some sand paper, cross hatched, new ring, and still you can turn the prop thru slowly and it seems to lack the compression of my ABC motors[&o]

Yes, your compression will get better . Bowman rings are know for their high quality and longevity, but they do require more "break in" time than usual.
Run your engine rich for about 10 to 15 flights and you will see your compression and your power increase significantly...
I run Bowman Rings in all my ringed engines.
Hope this helps.

.....preperation of the cylinder wall is paramount when re-ringing a used engine. I have been
stating this for a long time. On a new engine, with clearances and everything perfect, it is easy
to accomplish break-in as long as the engine gets up to temperature quickley, and the engine
is not run sloppy rich....this is the worst thing yopu can do when breaking in a ringed
engine.
I run my ringed engines to full peak, full RPM, 30 seconds after I start the engine for the first time
...and run it for about 20 seconds, then I richen it up slightly too cool it off....then back to peak
for another 20 seconds.
Of course I use plenty of castor oil, and never over heat my engines. Maybe thats why my
ringed ball bearing engines last 15 years between overhauls.
FBD.

thats kind of the way it went Dave, start, fourcycle, scream, fourcycle, scream some more, happy medium,up and down for the whole tank. I used your advise for the the 120 grit paper too.
I hope the compression comes up some with use.[]

With a new ST ring mine have taken as much as two gallons to seat good. I am like FBD, I don't baby em with new rings either. The one that took soooo looooong, was a Chinese G51. I about gave up on it when it finally came in. It ran real good from day one but was hard to hand start because of the low compression from the new ring. It now starts one flick after a good prime.
Hope yours comes in as well.
