Gosh Ed, you must have pretty lousy consumer protection laws over there.

Here, unless the dismantling/re-assembly of the engine had clearly caused damage, a supplier couldn't duck their obligation by using that excuse.

What consumer protection laws? That ended in the eighties. It's been a free-for-all ever since. You know, "deregulation"?

Im not sure exactly what Saito's like but I was at Mac Hodges hobby shop a while back to buy some glow fuel and I told them I was using Omega Fuel which is a synthetic/castor blend and they said to stick to all synthetic which is what Cool Power is. I went with what they said since they have been doing this stuff for years. Also the recommended fuel for the Saito 125 from Horizon Hobbys website is 10%-30% synthetic mix.
1. Fuel. For maximum protection and
loogevity of Saito engines, Saito
recommends a fuel containing 20% oil
and 10-15% nitro methane. If this blend is
not readily available, the next best
selection is a high quality 2-cycle glow
fuel, such as Hangar 9 Aero-Blend,
Omega, Cool Power, K&B, Power
Master, etc. Use of fuels composed
entirely of castor oil is not recommended.
A mix of synthetic-castor oil is acceptable
and can be found in the various fuels
described above.

Says in the book that a mix is acceptable, but no where does it say full synthetic. By the way the Heli fuel they have been using is Omega (a oil blend). I guess I really don't understand the hate of castor?

I repaired a Saito 72 in June 2007 with a seized connecting rod. It was a new engine that had sat around never run for a few years. When the guy started it up with Cool Power the rod stalled it out in the first few seconds. This engine was out of warranty. I remember the guy buying the engine at a swap meet in 2005.

I worked with it for a while with WD40 and finally got the rod off the crank pin. After looking at the big end with a magnifying glass, it wasn't galled, so I kept moving it back and forth on the crank pin with the WD40 and whatever was in the rod came out and it was free. Still I doubt it had more than .001" clearance.

I then ran four tanks of fuel though the Saito 72 extremely rich and it never seized again.

This is why even if you don't want to pull the back plate you should load it with after run in oil. New, old or otherwise.

Saitos were coming from the factory with black moly chassis grease on the crank pin, cam lobes, and rocker arms for a while but maybe they have stopped this practice?

I know there were a lot of dry front bearings for a while there. I suppose they have production problems like everyone else?

There are production costs that are added when all the parts to be lubricated with the grease.[]

A good routine: Lubricate all moving parts prior to use straight from the package.

I will never run a new engine without at least removing the backplate. The photo below is of a NIB Magnum 32. Yes, that's a staple.[sm=confused.gif]

As for castor, what reason on earth would anyone possibly have for not using it?

Daver, I've been saying that for years ans have mentioned bfore that for the first two seasons of their lives my Saito 1.50, .80 and Enya .46MKII were run on Fox 15% fuel with 20% castor. The valves were a goldish color, the muffler on the Enya got awful looking but that's it, they're all three still running well with their original bearings and rings. The 1.50 has a new cylinder because I busted the original. I utilized the original ring on the 1.50 with no problem
