Default OS FT-120

I am trying to get one running for a friend that bought it on the bay. It doesn't appear to ever have been run. When I try to start it, it spits fuel out the carb, and if I choke it I can see it blowing bubbles in the tank. My thought is it is out of time like maybe 180*. Can't find any place that shows me what the cam gear looks like to know how to get it set right. Anyone help me out here?

Here's the manual for the FT160. They should time the same

Unfortunately in this manual it has no instructions for setting the cam

Remove the valve covers and check the valve action

One valve may be stuck open?

It is an alternate firing engine. With the pistons at Top Dead Center one cylinder should have both valves closed and clearance on the rocker arms while on the other cylinder, both valves will be slightly open. One is just closing and the other is just opening. The rocker arms on this cylinder should be even when you look across the top of them

If I remember correctly, with the back cover removed the dots on the two gears should be aligned with each other?

"A" is for the FT-120 and "B" is for the FT-120 II

w8ye and orbit8, thanks for the information. The pictures of the cam timing were exactly what I was looking for before I pulled the cover off. It was out of time and when put back to correct position then started on the second flip. I know this engine had never been run after looking at the pistons and having the cam cover off. Expect someone pulled the cam cover and the cam came with it and then didn't know what to do just put it back together and then it wouldn't start or run. Anyway thanks again for the help and my friend now has a nice twin to put on his Cub.

It is the Graham Rice OS repair book from back in the late 80's. It's only good for the engines of that era

Look around at the places that sell model airplane books and you will probably find it.

There's another by Graham Rice for Saitos from back in the late 80's - early 90's
