fuel consumption of ys 120 vs .90?
I got to fly my ultimate with a ys 120 for about 5 flights before the season got cold and was amazed at how much fuel it took on each flight. I am way overpowered with the 120 and was wondering if anyone thought I would see all that much difference if I sold the 120 and put in a ys .90? Might not be worth the hassle. I am use to flying a .70 4 stroke and not having to put a ton of fuel in it to fly.
Thanks
Jeff

Even after full tuning of the engine, if you want power out of a motor, you have to put fuel in. Same as your car, if you just drive around gently you use little fuel, if you race around every where you use heaps. From what I have heard and seen the YS engines are heavy on fuel usage, but have good power output.

My YS 110 is gentle on the fuel, I can`t understand why a correctly tuned 120 would be a gashog?
Are you sure you are not still running it too rich?

And what about getting a non YS 110-120 engine? They may use cheaper fuel and less consumption, and you'll fly just good!

The YS doesn't NEED to run on 20% nitro fuel. I test ran an FZ-63 on 0% nitro and it was great and still made plenty of power. I didn't get much time messing with the needles or fly it, however. There is at least one thread here somewhere about running YS four strokes on low or no nitro fuel.
YS consume more fuel than other equivalent size four stroke engines because they make more power. In addition the low end often needs to be set on the rich side compared to other four strokes to prevent detonation on throttle up. A lot of people tell you not to touch the regulator, and most of the time they are right. it seems that sometimes it needs a little adjustment.

I replaced a YS 120 NC with a ST2300 with tuned can. The ST setup makes more power and swings a larger prop. I find that I can do most things with the Tigre at considerably less throttle than I was using the YS at.. I was using a 20 oz tank with 15% powermaster ( 4 stroke fuel) in the YS, where as the ST uses 5% nitro and a 12 oz tank. I just kept the YS at full bore for most of the flight. It was a good change for me. Not only am I using less fuel, it is cheaper per gallon.
With that said, nothing sounds as good as the YS, and the transition is awesome. I just enjoy trying different setups to compare performance. I decided the YS needs a smaller plane. If you could fly at reduced power, you will save fuel with whatever engine you fly.
I also use a ST 90 in 60 size planes and get similar performance on the smaller airframe. I rarely hit full throttle with them out of necessity, just for cool stuff! I use less fuel than a sixty at full throttle. I use a tuned can for this as well. Getting out of the throttle really does stretch the fuel.

RE: fuel consumption of ys 120 vs .90?
I have several YS 120 engines ranging from the SF, NC,AC and SC With the NC being the weakest in the bunch it still will swing a 16x8 at 92-9300 RPM's where as the SC and AC will swing the same prop at over 10 K if I let them, followed by the SF's at about 92-9400. My 2300 will swing a 16x6 APC at around 8900-9000 max but it does not have a pipe just a bisson muffler, maybe I got a anemic one. But it runs great and is very dependable. I'm sure the pipe makes a huge difference. The YS120 AC is a gas hog theres no two ways around it, the others are not bad on fuel at all, but again I don't run them WOT all the time either. I use 15% nitro 20 % oil in all my engines 2 & 4 strokes, The higher the nitro content the more fuel will be consumed.
My buddy has a ST 2300 with a Perry Pump and Carb and he claims it will out perform his YS 140-L . Since its in a large cub its sort of hard to tell. The tune on a YS is everything and a width of the screwdriver blade can make all the difference in the world. I have had to tweek the reg on all of my YS engines, some more than others. My 91 YS's are not hard on fuel either, Granted they use less than the 120's but thats expected. I think W8ye has hit it about right 20 % less, but again it all depends on what type of flying a person is doing and how much of a lead foot they have *L*

RE: fuel consumption of ys 120 vs .90?
my YS-110 consume around 1.75 oz per minute at full throttle... this is very thirsty engine...
it's my first 4 cycle engine.. and with a long history of two cycle engines i was used to stick the throttele stick at top position for most of the flight..
over the time i have learend that i need to take the advantage of the four cycle engine which allow to get efficient power at low r.p.m, and doing so will save very expensive fuel...
the engine is so powerfull, and it's installed on a light airframe ( Tai-Ji90 ) so during the flight the throttle position is usually between 40%-60%
now i can fly 10 minutes without any fear that my 16 oz tank will get empty..

But he is used to an OS .70. Know what I mean? It's not just the difference in displacement, but the difference in the state of tune between brands too.
One thing to remember is that not all YS engines are nitro hogs. Some of the old 1.20 engines ran fine on 5% nitro fuel. And, like you indicated, Asmund, the tuning may not be leaned out as much as it should be. But a YS has a reputation to protect. Power costs money and lots of fuel.

RE: fuel consumption of ys 120 vs .90?
i never tried to use less the 20% nitro.. but i guess using 5% or 10% will cause loose of power... and then it have the extra power of the YS ....
few month ago we did some test ( by occasional ) in our field
we fly both OS-200 and YS-110, the result was very similar fuel consumptions! ( the test was for 7 minutes flight at full throttle position )
for the OS-200 we used 15%, and for the YS 30%
i assume the OS-200 have around 30% more power then the YS.
my conclusion was that the YS-110 is real fue hog... but of course this only my individual impression
i still love that engine for is other great characturistics

it was not real "test" that stand for respectable labratories.... but it helped me to understand that the YS-110 is very thirsty engine...

RE: fuel consumption of ys 120 vs .90?
Considering that there is only ONE absolutely optimum fuel air ratio(for any given Fuel, temperature, air pressure situation).I would tink the 90 would have to use about 3/4 the fuel of a 120(when properly tuned).
