It would work well in an airplane that needs a little extra nose weight...

Never have to reset the ball and socket ;)

I wouldn't do this conversion to a viable engine...but if you had one that was all worn out...

She is running properly, just not like a Cox 1/2A!

Gotta love that needle valve. She also looks to have the best throttle I have ever seen on a Cox Baby Bee. I think this conversion might finally make the Cox a practical power source for a toy airplane. This looks like it belongs in the same category as the ZDE (Zero Displacement Engine).

It is pretty old news by now, but evidently the electric motors are so ugly that they have to be hidden in every possible way.

I only have one word for it, Sacrilege! :(

To compare the weight between Cox engine and brushless engine, there are no save weight to convert to a electric powered plane such as a U/C plane to example..[:'(]

Didn't see any specs on mass or energy density.
But for 1/2A control line the electric power plant is very feasible.
I like to fly these for sport.

With the larger prop disk area my disk loading is actually better than most of my slime power 1/2As. The consistent power flight after flight and with steady power through out the whole flight, actually make the electric C/L more desirable. I think there are now electric precision aerobatic C/L ships that are competitive in the FAI classes.

I will say that the set up shown in the link performs much like a Cox Black Widow on a 5.25 x 4 prop. A properly set up Tee Dee will out pull the shown set up but it is very difficult to get the kind of reliability, of the electric, with a Cox. There are good reasons that the Cox 1/2A is now relegated pretty much to just nostalgia.

Nostalgia seems to be in the eye of the beholder, Fox engines for instance are just as rare at my local field as the cox engines are...

What is wrong with the engine in video?
The tank is filled with junk, clear that out and it should run just fine again. :D

Taken a step further one can make the argument that all glow engine are about as relevant as the horse drawn chariot. Yes, they still hold chariot races but you no longer see them on the field of battle!

In the sub 3Kw class the glow engine is rapidly becoming obsolete for our toy planes. I now fly many 14 watt R/C Guillow conversion ships on electric power, with the power and ease I never could get out of my Cox 0.010s, and I now have full throttle control!

Obsolete is a rather strong word. On the contrary, the novelty of brushless is wearing off as electrics are rather booring, and stacking batteries are not as fun as collecting proper engines. I also think there might just be a small gap between 14W and 3kW were glow and diesel works very nicely. If you are happy with electrics, then good for you, but for a lot of us it just doesn't offer any excitment or attract any interest.

If one wants a consistent, reliable high torque power plant then yes electrics are boring. Yes, 14watts is different from 3KW. Much like a 1/2A is different from a 5 cylinder radial engine. But as the thread is about the electrification of the Baby Bee I kept my example under 100 watts. Now it takes all kinds.
And yes the glow engine is rapidly falling to the electric motor. So, it might soon be time to learn about Kv Kt, flux saturation etc. The piston is so James Watt:D
