Help! Irvine .53 assembly question

I'm reassembling my Irvine .53.
Which way does the backplate go? Does the flat area go on top or bottom?

Backplate

Gtalbot,

The flat area of the backplate is to allow greater clearance for the descending piston, so it goes on top.

What use would there be for it on the bottom?
