RE: Edwards 5 cyl. Radial Glow Engine
they only made around 30 or so of those engines. There were plans for it out there too. But it would be a serious undertaking to machine all the parts and put it together. some were used on airplanes though. Edwards made the first engine in the 1980's and up till around 1994 made 30 more.
http://www.craftsmanshipmuseum.com/KnappCol.htm It is a really nice looking engine too. it looks really complicated with the external oil lines running all over the place. In my opinion just making the little distributor for the ignition system would be a fantastic piece of work in and of itself. These are somewhat rare, it is hard to want to put it on the front of a model airplane with all the risks involved. A number of years ago someone put one up for sale on RCU and they wanted $4,000 US at that time. I am sure they would sell for a lot more nowadays. But if you have one, and want to fly it, do let us know how it goes, it is a great looking engine. I'd love to see some videos of it running with or without a airplane. http://www.craftsmanshipmuseum.com/images/PK2a.jpg |

earlwb,
I had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Edwards at the Giant scale meet in Las Vegas back in about 1985? or so. This engine had a crankshaft driven blower and a dry sump oil system. The lines that look like Aeroquip are actually the spark plug leads. He built these engines with a home made CNC mill using a Jet mill and a Commodore 64 computer. At the time I think they were selling for about $3000.00 and he was building about 4 a year. Yes this engine was actually flown and sounded great. That's Mr. Edwards in the lawn chair in the background. Happy flying, Oscar |

I remember pictures of it in RCM during that time. The plans are for the glow version. What is nice is, he provided the free plans as long as it is not commercial use. They have been updated to CAD.

Thanks for the pics, it is looking really nice on that plane.
I was actually thinking of this pic with all of the oil lines routed all over the engine. http://www.ronsmodelengines.com/Radial/IMAG000.JPG |
RE: Edwards 5 cyl. Radial Glow Engine
My guess is the one with the external oil lines was probably an earlier version.
Still what a great sound, Harley, eat your heart out[8D] Happy flying, Oscar |
