Tower Glow Plug???
 

I crashed a plane that had a Tower 75 in it.

After rebuilding, I tried starting it tonight and it sputtered and quit. Did that a few times so I checked the glow plug. Checked out RED...???

After about 5 more failures, I put the plug that came with the engine back in. It ran perfectly.

Anybody have any insight into the plug Tower ships with the engines? Seemed to make all the difference...and I want to buy more.

I have a few buddies that are running the tower plugs & they seem to think that they are a good plug, run it.

Hi Dan,

The Tower plugs look like and OS clone. It is very possible that OS makes them for tower. They even are that same mickey mouse "short reach" that is sold as a long reach plug.

My guess is that they are a poor man's OS # 8 plug. That would be good news!

This is a great question. Let's see if we can get Hobby Services involved and get an answer as to what they really are and what the heat range is

I had three Tower 46's. The plug that came in them was not a Tower plug but a GMS one.

I run the Tower Power plugs often and they seem to work as well as the OS counterpart.

The old Tower Idle bar plugs were not too successful for me. They tended to be on the cool side. They don't sell them anymore.

It is likely that ANY plug may have worked.

Plugs fail for a variety of reasons, and the fact that it "glowed" is almost meaningless.

The wire is plated/alloyed with platinum (or rhodium) to act as a catalyst with the methanol in the fuel. Many times, a plug will be corroded/carbonized through use and simply fail to function correctly even though it "glows".

So...before you all run out and buy a gross of Tower plugs....

I bought a 6 card of the old Tower plugs a few years ago and the material between the post and the plug body would get a hole blown in it on most of them. As Jim says, they were not very good.

I just wrote to Bax at Hobby Services and this is what he said:

I am unable to find any info on the Tower plugs. They "appear" to be made by OS. Does anyone have a clue to this or the heat range?

Also, why in the world are OS plugs so short when used in long reach applications? This leaves bare threads exposed inside of the head.

Tower Hobbies glow plugs are made for them by a large manufacturer overseas. We don't have the information you're looking for. You'd have to contact Tower to see if they'll release that information.

O.S. glow plugs are manufacactured to fit a wide variety of engines. On some engines they may be a bit short, on others a bit long. They're fine in O.S. engines.
