Nelson Engines
 

I've heard that Nelson no longer produces pylon engines. I checked their webpage and they have nothing. If this is the case, then what are people using now in pylon?

There is a gentleman, Mike Langlois, that is now building them. Someone will probably chime in with his contact info. Or folks use Dub Jett's fine engines.

Haven't been able to get Profi Pylon engines from him in a long time. Other Profi engines I don't know.

So is that what Q40, Q-500 are using? I know the F3D/FAI ones use the M.B. from the neatherlands. But those start at $600. I used to fly them, but it was a pain in the ass, so I went back to AMA Q40/422 class.

Q40 and Q500 (428) are using Nelsons and Jetts. Profi is only making a Q500 other than the MB Profi F3D engine. The Q500 Profi is not is not quite as fast as the new Long stroke Nelson and Jett Q500 motors. You do not see it at races much. There is a new class of Q500 (426). It uses a sport Jett motor and is about 15 to 20 mph slower than 428 but the motors are only $250. MB in the Netherlands is developing a new Q500 and Q40 motor with Profi but it will probably not be released in the US.

You are in Saugus. Have you been to our field in Castaic??
I would guess not or you would know there are several of us who race 424, 426, 428 and 422.
There is also a large heli contingent.
There is a race at Whittier narrows this coming week end.

Interesting. So he makes ONLY the Q40 and Q500 engines. That means the other Nelson engines are extinct - I knew there were no more .36 Combat engines, but I would have thought someone would still be making the F3D and free flight .15 engines. Apparently not..

Incidentally, Henry can still supply the flat-coil plugs, according to Larry Driskill. None of the pylon web sources sell them any more, though they do sell the Merlin equivalents, and there are people re-elementing burned out Nelson flat-coils (usually with very heavy wire). Funny thing is when one of these burns through an element the element hangs loose, like a thread.. I've seen 2-3 pictures.
