RE: Moki 180 Fuel problems
Capt: The exhaust ports are open so the sleeve has to be in the right position. I don't think the sleeve can be put in backwards, they usually have the notches to line up on the head and sleeve.

RE: Moki 180 Fuel problems
Paul,
Looks like your spraybar is OK. I will be going flying Tuesday (weather permitting) and will test my theory with all the different carbs & pieces in the plane. I'll report back Wednesday. Jim Weather poor today. I'll try Friday and will report what I find. |
RE: Moki 180 Fuel problems
Test flew the Extra with the 2.10 with the good spraybar today - worked just fine. The engine won't run with the leaky spraybar. I'll do some high magnification inspection of the suspect one tomorrow. Maybe there is a crack or split that isn't real obvious.

RE: Moki 180 Fuel problems
Jim:
I replaced the Moki 180 with a different one, used the Slimline Pitts/W Smoke . Same muffler as I had on the origional engine, opened the main needle valve 4 turns open, and turned the remote valve 2 turns open. Primed the carb, it ran fine at idle and good transition at full throttle. It peaked out at 8600 RPM with an 18/8 M.A. prop. I let it idle for about 5 minutes at 2500, then ran it WOT, it operated perfectly. So every thing I did, with the fuel lines, etc, was ok, The origional engine I sent to Bill is still in the shop, I have not heard from him yet. It had to be something simple, bad "O" ring on the low end disk.? I could not get it off, that's why I sent it back to him.I will post when I find out what he found. There was no need to install a Perry pump, Cline, or close off the tubes on the muffler. It runs like it should without doing all of that Paul |
RE: Moki 180 Fuel problems
Paul,
I agree 100% about regulators, pumps, pinching exhaust tubes - they run just fine "as-is"! I'm glad you got your setup working. Let us know what Bill finds. I suspect that maybe your low speed disk o-rings were stuck or disintegrated. They get very hard and fragile after a long time. So do the ones in a Perry carb (ask how I know). I also had re-done my tank and changed all the o-rings in the carb for new ones, but no luck until I changed the carb. This past Friday my 2.10 worked perfectly, so I also know that my tank, etc is fine. I had intended to take off the cowl and change just the spraybar to prove my idea, but it started raining. That will be the test next time I take the Extra out - maybe the 16th. Jim |
RE: Moki 180 Fuel problems
Jim:
I finally received an answer on the problem from Bill Jensen. " Found debris in the Carb inlet Banjo fitting and throttle barrel between the Cat's Eye and Fuel Delivery nozzle.???? Before I sent it back, I sprayed carb cleaner through the entire carb, then pumped fuel thru it... . How in the world could they find dirt after all of that??? Anyway, the charge for labor was $127.00 including shipping. Bill said they lost their shirt on this repair, it took him 14 hours, but only charged me for 4 hours labor. I can't beleive this!!!, hell, the engine is not worth $490.00 charging $35.00 an hour for labor. and charging $127.00 , he was giving me a break??? Well, I paid him, but that's it from now on. That's the last time I'll get taken for a ride on engine repairs. If I can't fix it, it's a boat anchor period. Paul |
RE: Moki 180 Fuel problems
Paul,
Ouch! That's awfully steep, even at the "reduced" rate. I've overhauled and repaired several hundred engines for myself and the guys here in Sarasota. I usually only charge parts at cost plus a FEW dollars ($5-$15) labor. If I do something wrong or slowly, then it's to my account. Of course, I'm not trying to make a living at it and $35.00 per hour isn't really very high nowadays, but -14 hours?? Oh well, live and learn. Thanks for the info! Jim |
RE: Moki 180 Fuel problems
Seems like they need some more efficient diagnostic techniques. If you suspect carb issues, then install known good one and test. If its fixed, then you know where the problem is located. Rebuild, clean, and test. Heck, there is only a few parts in a carb. How could you possibly spend 14 hours on any 2 stroke??
If it wasn't fixed with carb, call customer to get the go ahead to investigate further before spending $35.00 times X hours!!! |
