setup for an engine to never quit?

I use 4 strokes engines , most of them upside down.
I have some quit , and lost some airplanes.
can anyone recommend a setup so engines never quit?

the tank should be higher?
lower in the fuse?
Run lean? rich?

I ddle is also a problem , is or too high or quits so when is high you come for landings way to fast and is hard to slow down, you kind of have to push them into the ground and that stresses the retracts.

any help is welcomed

Inverted 4 stroke

The YS 4 strokes run excellent inverted. Most others tend to have problems. Alot of people run the 4 strokes not quite inverted but at a 45 degree angle from bottom center. This keeps fuel from pooling on the plug. You tend to have to run a leaner low end to keep them running. The easiest way around this is to add an onboard glow system. When the engine is below 1/4 throttle, the onboard glow driver kicks in and keeps the plug lit. Good Luck!

4 STROKE INVERTED

I run an OS 70 FS inverted in a GLOBAL AVENGER plane and have no trouble! I'm running an OS 4 stroke plug in it. I do give it a little extra time on the ground for warm up. and I run her up good before I go out to taxi. (YOU DO HAVE TO DO THE ENGINE ADJUSTING WHILE IT IS IN THE INVERTED POSITION)
I have a friend that flies "war birds" and all of his 2 and 4 strokes are running inverted. He does not have a problem either.

But the glow igniter is still a great idea! I bought one on E-BAY to give a try.

OBG

I have an "intelligent" glow driver which is supplied by Nelson Hobbies. Very compact and useful. It senses plug condition and only comes on above a set point if the plug is cooling. It conserves the glow nicad battery (and plug). Definitely worth a look.

I have also used McDaniel units with success.

There are a number of good OBG systems around. I am sure other's will post to advise their favorites!

All setups quit if not set properly, run with an old plug, wrong fuel etc.

I have never had problems with inverted 4 strokes provided the tank is set at correct height -- center it to the spray bar. Use quality polu (OS F). Run your engine with moderate amount of nitro (10-20%) and set on the rich side. Do a proper break in.

If these basics are right, you will not need an onboard glow.

Which 4 strokes do you have? Often times you are flooding your engine due to a too high position of the tank. Recheck you tank position and then most likely a leaner needle setting. The onboard glow is really nice and works well. It does add weight to the plane though.

I also have 2 different 4-strokes inverted without prob, no deadsticks either. It takes some tuning though, as DesertRatt said, it needs to be set up. With the inverted engines the settings are critical, although not difficult once learned. Ever so important though. He also mentioned warming it up, I do the same for my OS 70. Let it warm for about a minute, then it seems fine. The way I dialed mine in was just reserved myself to the fact that I was going to have a "workday" at the flying field, and might not get to fly other then test hops. It worked out well, as once it was done initially, I haven't had to change a thing.
