Which is more powerful?
Between the Saito 300 (twin glow) or the crrc 55cc (twin gas), which is more powerful? I'm guessing the Saito has the edge, since it is 50cc (3.00 cu in =50cc??) and glow is more powerful than gas. I have the saito on a GP Giant Stik, and am considering replacing it with the crrc. But, other than better fuel economy, I think the Saito is the better choice. Am I correct?

RE: Which is more powerful?
Cannot be sure prior finding the right Propellers for each of the motors and for that aircraft aerodynamics...and also keep in mind that in gasoline there is very little added lubricant which is heavy substantial part in the glow motors, so part of the size & weight of the whole construction for the same flight time.... I fly always Glow because they smell better... the rest in the peformance is visible for displacements above 100cc in favor of th gasoline and maybe only because of the weight of the lubrcant.

RE: Which is more powerful?
That would be my choice too, gas engines just don't get it.
|
RE: Which is more powerful?
On that plane I would ditch the glow engine in a heartbeat. I've gone gas in all my larger planes and never looked back, The savings in fuel will get you over the minimal difference in torque,

RE: Which is more powerful?
Have you tried the35cc OS-BGX-1 ? Also a converted 80cc Gas into Methanol for Giant Scale : cannot come even near with any Gasoline.
|
RE: Which is more powerful?
A two stroke gas engine with a bit of quality will win over a four stroke glow engine, if both are allowed the same rpm, or use the same prop.
Bog a four stroke down to 6000 rpm, like you can the gas 55, and see what happens! The four stroke glow will shake your plane apart even before it starts detonating, whilst the two stroke gas will purr like a kitten. |
RE: Which is more powerful?
I prefer the torque of a 4 stroke most of the time. Just my own preferences. Different kinds of engines.
|
RE: Which is more powerful?
I would pick the Saito as bette and much cooler. 4 stroke glow is about equal to 2 stroke gas except fuel consumption.

RE: Which is more powerful?
Has anyone compared torque curves of same displacement 2 & 4 stroke engines?. I think most would be suprised.
|
RE: Which is more powerful?
In fact the main question is What we are comparing, engines or the Outcome of the 'group' = Engine+#Strockes+FuelWeight+Propeller ... :D
|
RE: Which is more powerful?
Fly the plane on both engines and see which performs the best for you
I dislike the gasoline smell in my home Kit Building and flying mostly 60 and 90 size planes on two cycle glo myself for 23 years |
RE: Which is more powerful?
Yes, the pleasure of placing a good looking RC plane in the living room is quite lost if that smells gasoline. Some in Finland use in fact Gasoline where they mix Strowbery kind of odeor in it and then try to immagine to be in Strowberry-field, but that trick works better with Glow-fuels; once we made the whole field smelling like a peach-garden... No kidding, there are people on this Earth who can invent any thing...in the name of RC Planes !
Back to the 'What is more powerful' seems to have simpler answer like 'depends' because after all Power = RPM * Torque and that is different for different RPM for any engine. And there is no much sense to try to use the same propeller for the same engine and different style of flying ... so it looks this question has the simple answer as already pointed by many = depends on what you like and does NOT depend on the motor if the rest of the parameters are not specifed. Cheers, Nick |
RE: Which is more powerful?
If I compare the engine in the video, running a Zinger 22x6 prop at 6800 +-100 rpm with a two stroke MVVS45 (43cc!);
The MVVS running a Bolly 22x8 prop and TD75 canister turns 7350RPM, 5.2hp, 28Lbs thrust (data Greg Gothern) The Saito 50cc on methanol (glow fuel) running a JZ prop open exhaust at 6900 rpm, 2.95 hp and 19 Lbs thrust I think I can rest my case here! The smaller gas two stroke engine has almost double the HP of the larger four stroke on methanol, and 50% more thrust. |
RE: Which is more powerful?
Well, I finally made my decision. I installed the 55cc gasser on the Stik, and put the Saito on an old H9 Cap 232, that originally had a Moki 2.10 on it. Not sure if I went up or down on that one[:o] The Moki had loads of power.....but I do love the way the Saito sounds:D Now, what to do with the Moki??

RE: Which is more powerful?
If the smell of regular pump gas is an issue then go to the nearest airport and get some avgas. About $2.00 more per gallon but there is almost no odor . At least none like pump auto-grade gasoline.

RE: Which is more powerful?
My grandson loves the smell of my workshop, which is a mix of gasoline and much more!

RE: Which is more powerful?
Whats your feeling about using CH ignition vs regular glow plugs with regards to power? I have a Saito 300 single carb with a McDaniels onboard glow. I was wondering if I might not get more power switching over to CH...
I have a very old CH single ignition from long time ago. It made a HUGE difference in the way my then OS90 FS ran. |
RE: Which is more powerful?
i have a saito 300, and the 450, a 55 cc gas will blow the doors of either. the 450 weighs 7 pounds which makes it almost useless for anything but a warbird or bipe with a real short nose. they are a little better if ya spend the money for 30% nitro content. I just retired my glows, sellin em out.

RE: Which is more powerful?
I like the smell of gasoline.
|
RE: Which is more powerful?
Me too. And kerosene is even better.
|
RE: Which is more powerful?
Got away from nitro when I got away U control and I dont even remember what year that was it was so long ago.once I went to gas I never looked back.I love the smell weed wackers in the morning.

RE: Which is more powerful?
You bin watchin the same movies i have.Is napalm a legal fuel additive??
