Whats up with these engines?

Anyone have one?
I wounder if it would be any good for 3D ing?
I would like to hear any comments about them.
I did a scearch for rcv and not a thing came up.

No good for 3d! These are four strokes that have props that turn at half the speed of the crank. they have a huge amout of torque and turn gigantic props. This is perfect for scale applications, but not 3D.
They run well enough that I am going to purchase another, but it is a low revving torque monster!

The RCV .58CD is the only one that turns a prop at crankshaft speed. 13x6 at 9,000.

Had one in a Cessna 182. Engine ran flawlessly till pilot error
Easy start, great runner, loved it
Quirks:
a) Need to use a .70 size engine mount as the case is too wide for most .40 size supplied mounts
b) that's it

Rick, I do have one, it turns a 12x6 three blade at 9,000 rpm and is very smooth, I have run it on WildCat 10% premium with 16% lube and WildCat 15% Premium Extra with 18% lube and with a Fox miracle plug, OSf and H9 Super Plug. It runs the same no matter what. It had a slight gear whine for the first 30 minutes and that is almost gone.

I am assuming from your response that you have tried the 58 in a 3d plane and have found it not to be a good combo.
Could you elaborate on what made this a bad combo or are you just guessing????

No, I have the 60 and the 90. For 3D in that size I would think you would want a two stroke with instant throttle response. An MVVS .49 perhaps. Go ahead and try the RCV .58 and see what happens and let us know!

I know the 60 and 90 wouldn't work very well for 3 d ing but the 58 is more like a regular 4 stroke. Most 3 d ers seem to like the 4 stroke over 2 strokes so I just thought the 58 might be worth trying.
Does any one have a 58 ?
how does it run compared to a normal 4 stroke?

If you go to there webpage and click on the RCV 58 photo gallery, There are a couple of fun-fly planes with the 58 in them. A Magic Extra and a Limbo Dancer. It says that the Magic Extra can hover at half throttle using the 58. So that means it can be used for 3D just as any other 4-stroke!

Yes I have an RCV 58. Super engine, but not as powerful as a normal 52FS. Certinly no good for prop hanging unless your plane weighs less than 3,1/2 lbs.

Fitted in a seagull Super Stearman, it flew, but marginal on power at 5,1/2 lbs. A nice sound, but now changed for a Thunder Tiger 54FS, fly's much better.

I recommend an Irvine 53 for your needs. Powerful, reliable and smooth throttle.
