Marvel Mystery Oil?
 

I used to use Marvel Mystery Oil(for air tools) as a after-run oil.....is it really OK t use now days?

I haven't heard of them changing the formulation. The air tool oil is what you want - to prevent rust. I follow Clarence Lee's recipe, a 50/50 mixture of MMO air tool oil and ATF.

This guy at an LHS told me not to use marvel mystery oil in my engines as this will glue the piston to the sleeve. It turns out that this guy and his dad created an after run oil and that they are still getting paid for it. I used to use a 50 50 mix of atf and mm and this worked great but someone told me to use the MM Airtool oil which I use now. The only thing I've noticed is when you start your engine for first time it smokes allot. Michael

MM, air tool oil, any non detergent 10w works fine. Clarence Lee has stated "if you want to stop corrosion, take out the glow plug and submerse the engine in oil." He went on to state that being his earlier remark was not practical, he suggested what I did in my opening response.

I use Remington gun oil. Never had a problem. It works well on my guns too! ;)

just make sure to use the Air Tool oil - the other "marvel mystery oil" isn't what you want to use.

Dub Jett recommended using the Marvel air tool oil to me as an after run oil. I figure if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.

Been using Marvel Air Tool Oil for over 30 years with wonderful results. I do mix it with transmission fluid for long storage as I have a few more engines than I do airplanes.

This is true of Marvel Mystery Oil. It's happened to me - it hardens into this hard red stuff. But Marvel Airtool Oil is something altogether different and is used by many modelers, including myself. The caveat is - it's got ignition retardants in it (makes sense..) so it might not be the best stuff to use in model diesels.

Not particularly easy to find, though. Compressor oil is, but I've been told it's not the same thing as air tool oil. Surely other people make air tool oil, not just Marvel?

Dunking in kerosene works as well, and would be somewhat cheaper.

I found the air tool at an a local auto parts store and it comes in a small bottle with a flip top. It works pretty good too!! Mj

ok. Since WD-40 stands for water dispersant # 40 and was invented to prevent corrosion on Nuculerhttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gifmissles would it not work in our engines? You can buy it in a non aerosol can and pour it right in. It is the same thingas air tool oil and I have used itin my nail guns for years.

Same as MMO, its just a cheap oil thined with mineral spirits. When the mineral spirits evaporats you have a very sticky oil that hardens. Makes a very good glue.

I used to say that I kept WD40 in a separate room from my engines. I have since gotten rid of it. NAPA Fogging Oil makes a great ARO and a $3.00 can lasts a long time.

I can't tell you that Marvel Mystery oil is good or bad to use as after run. The one thing I can tell you is that my first and last experience with this product was about 10 years ago when I thought I was doing A good thing with A OS108 motor that I wasn't going to use for a while. I fully lubricated the intake and exhaust ports with the Marvel oil, then put it in a plastic vacuum sealed bag. A year later when I opened the seal to use the motor I found a rusted solid frozen piston, the engine was completely seized up and useless. For what it's worth. jmpups

I have a feeling you were using more than 0-5% nitro and didn't allow the crankcase to vent sufficiently. The result is the marvel oil basically coated the parts locking the moisture and any nitric acid residue in. A guy I know had the same exact thing happen with a .25FX. I don't recall what oil he used exactly, but I believe it was an automotive mineral oil. Filled the engine completely with oil, dumped it out and stored it. Bearings rusted solid.

I suggest venting the crankcase of 2-strokes for a few days (piston at BDC) before loading with oil. This is my practice, though I use 5% nitro in all of my engines except one. I rarely use anything for storage in the 2-strokes as the castor does a good job of keeping stuff rust free. My Enya 60-4C got filled and stored full of ATF for the winter. Turns smooth as butter

Hi All, I put in Marvel Mystery Oil in my OS .40FP 28 years ago and now that I'm getting back into the hobby, I pulled it out and unwrapped it....... turns smooth and no visible residue.</p>
