I read where it was the AX line only (for now) being made in china. Some say there is a difference in quality, fit and finish.

I hope so, because this AX 65 is not at all up to par withthe other 50+ O.S. Engines I have.

The running part is very worrying.

The ones I have seen in my LHS appear to have the same fit and finish as the japanese made, but they do not have the word "Japan" cast in the case.

RE: O.S. Engines now made in China

How can you determine fit at the LHS? Did they let you take them apart? If you are just flipping the prop a Magnum will seem to have the same fit. But they are worlds apart. OS has good quality control over their fit, much better than Magnum. It's just a shameOS fit is soo loose. If they were tighter from the factory they would last longer.

No, I didn't disassemble the engines. So sorry to mislead you. They just "looked" the same in my hand.

RE: O.S. Engines now made in China

So they have the same finish. Fit is unknown.

Almost every OS engine made has been copied by someone in china
Quality control and metallurgy are there short comings
They LOOK the same but are not the same !

"they are worlds apart"

In terms of manufacturing expertise and quality of build those worlds are coming closer every year.

My dad just bought an O.S. Gt 22 and it said made in japan on the box and it has JAPAN stamped into the case. As far as I know that is there newest engine.

RE: O.S. Engines now made in China

I just looked at a 46AXII that I bought last week and it too is made in China. This is very disappointing, I won't look for this to last too long. I wonder how the liner is going to hold up. I use 15% Omega with 4o/z of castor added. I bought a 46AXII last fall and I got about 3 months out of it. The liner didn't peel, it just wore out evenly. With Tower getting $85.00 for a piston and liner, these engines are now pretty much disposable as you can get a whole new engine on sale for about $129.00. Maybe because of the popularity of electric, OS needed to make the engines cheaper to make up for the market decline.

RE: O.S. Engines now made in China

Just because a engine is new wont mean it was now the Chinese made one, Only certain models (apparently the 65AX is one of them) However just because its made in China won't mean it will be the same quality as everything else, When a huge company has things made there they put a quality standard in place and if they make sub quality parts then the Chinese company eats the parts, Thus is why we see some of the knock offs of hanger 9 and Great planes, Many times there planes that failed the QUality check so the change a little of it and sell it as some thing else that looks like the original. The quality of china is getting better but still has a long way to go, I hope they get there soon, it's getting really hard to buy ANYTHING not made in China. Now I'm just waiting to see what they call the 65AX copy made by Sanye lol.

The box said made in China and the engine didn't say made in Japan. OS' quality has been slipping anyway, so who knows, maybe these won't be much different anyway.

I just bought an OS LA .25 at the LHS that was still made in Japan. On the box and the crankcase. I had it on the test stand yesterday and it ran great! Apparently only some of the models have been outsourced.

I've been an OS man for many years, but the ASP 46 I bought a while ago idles better than any OS. Nothing wrong with a good mfg'r from China.

I haven't been out to our field in almost two years now. One of my friends, my first instructor, stopped by my house this morning and he made an interesting comment. The guys show up at the field now with a bunch of electric planes. They jump out of the car, turn the TX , turn on the plane and launch, less than a minute from turning off the engine in their car until they are airborne. After that flight, the grab another plane, turn it on and launch. When they run out of planes, the put them in the car and leave. No time trying to get an engine running and to socialize with other members who are trying to help. On the Chinese built engines. If any of you are old enough to remember after WWII, "made in Japan" meant toys stamped out of old Budweiser Cans (the old steel ones) and wind up mechanics that broke on the second wind. It was a sign of poor quality. Today, it is a sign of very good quality for the most part. The Chinese stuff it improving also. I have Magnum and SAP engines that are top notch. I buy machine tools from a company in Hong Kong and the price is really good and the quality is as good as I can handle in my home shop. I've bought batteries for my cordless phones the didn't survive the first charge. I suspect that if someone like O.S. were to closely monitor the product they were getting and make the Chinese company meet their quality standards, that you would not see any difference. However, if they go to China and shop for the lowest bid and leave it up to the Chinese company to come up with QC standards, all bets are off. The Made in China label seem to be something that we in the US have come to hate, but love to pay for. Don
