Expensive old props

2 Attachment(s)
These old RevUp 13x6 props are bid, on ebay, at $105.00 with 9 hrs. to go. Can anyone fathom why they are worth so much?

eBay bidders are nuts.

Or they know something that we don't.

There is nothing special about those props. Them being very old would make me very wary of using them on an engine.

The bidder probably thinks they are full scale LOL

They are up to 139.50 with an hour to go.

Wood does not fatigue, or strain harden. Those props are just as safe as the day they were made. I've got RevUps from the same era, and would use them tomorrow if needed.

I have some too that I bought at an auction. I have run them with not problem. The final was 30 bids for $147. I'm flabbergasted. The seller bust be ecstatic.

The problem with wood is it dries out over time and gets brittle. Maple is especially notorious for this. If those wood props were kept in a controlled environment for much of their life so they didn’t dry out too much, then yes.. They should be fine. Coming from eBay - it’s anyones guess. I prefer to play it safe myself and stick to what I know the history of.

I'm sitting on a gold mine and didn't know it.

Label it with the keywords “rare”, “vintage”, “hard to find”, etc. and you will make a pile of money.

Don't forget my 10% commission.

I think I'm sitting on a gold mine too! I'm still flying some of my Top Flite beach wood props. 6% moisture content is optimum, and will remain mostly unchanged for "finished" props. Unfinished props might loose some strength if the moisture gets lower, or higher. So unless you live in Antarctica, or cook your props in the oven, they should be just fine.

If I find some antique wood props, I’ll send them to you. Plastic props serve me well.

GREG DOE 01-23-2018 09:32 PM

Qwksport, Thanks, but I'm good on props, most of which are swap meet finds. I think I bought 3 or 4 new props last year for racing applications.
