Questions on Selecting an Engine
 

Is there any place that can show how to select an engine for a newly constructed plane?

I guess what I mean is, what are the true determining factors ..... weight??

I am in the design phase of a F4U Corsair....building from scratch....and need to start on the components. So my biggest hurdle to face in my mind is the selection of the correct prop as well as the correct engine.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on this.....thanks.

You will need an approximate target weight and size for your plane. This will give you an idea for displacement of the engine. A warbird type plane would not like a peaky racing type engine at all, so a 4 cycle would be a natural, or a sport type 2 cycle. Once the engine is selected, a range of propellor sizes will come with the directions. Ground clearance can be a factor in determining the prop size also, and for that reason many full size planes have used 3 or 4 bladed props, of smaller diameter. A 2 bladed prop will be more effecient however, due to the blades running in less turbulant air.
