Hello,

I would just like to have your feedback on this class of engines (brands, performance, carbs setting...), to know which one I 'd better buy. I do not want to go for an OS .61 FX engine, nor for a jett (too expensive). Do u have any good alternative solution :eek: ?

For the money, you can't go wrong with the Tower .61, but in that case, you may as well go ahead and buy the .75, since it's only $10 or so more. They're the same engine, just a different bore. You can also try the Thunder Tiger Pro .61. It is a very reliable engine, but not one of the strongest. both brands named are very reliable, and affordable engines, though, the Tower is one of the strongest and cheapest. Just my 2 cents.

The Fox .60 won the MAN shoot out last winter, they have a .74 version also, Tower came in second. The Tower probably suffers from some QA problems, but the FOX has a carb design flaw but is fixable. If Fox has come out with the new twin needle version I would try that. Engines not in the shoot out I would consider before most of the engines that were in the shoot out are the Webra .60, HP .60, and K&B Twister .60.

I have a MDS 68 which is a great powerplant. Starts easily and lot of power for a 60 size engine. It's still not completely broken in and just keeps getting better. I have an old black head MDS 46 that is the most dependable 2 stroke engine I have. I've been told that there was a carb problem with some of the early engines but I haven't had it.

Enya 60X....true AAC (not ABC) construction, excellent carb, very powerful, runs extremely well on zero nitro fuel. The only fault I've found is that the back of the muffler tends to unscrew but a rivet fixes that. Or if you wish, the Enya 80X based on the same crankcase but ringed (I have both).

I have two that I am currently using and that I would recommend- (Many on the list above are great also esp. Webra-)

Tower- 75 (Can't beat it for the price- and mine does shut-off...)
Rossi-60 (Screams- great if you want some speed-)

Both of these have the same, or very close to the same, footprint of the OS-61FX ... I have used all 3 in the same plane that has solid wood motor mounts- no problems...

The only people I have found that call the MDS 68 engine a good power house is on this forum. My own experience is 100% negative and others in my club are running the same opinion. Bar none, the MDS 68 I owned was the most difficult engine to run and for me it had less power than one of my OS FX .46s in a frame that was about 20% heavier. I had the same problem with an MDS 18. I've learned my lesson and avoid this brand like a plague.

IMPORTANT CRITERIA : AT LEAST AS POWERFUL AS AN OS .61 FX...

Price range is not really relevant, if it stays far way from Jett's ones...

Has anyone ever used a .72 Irvine ? As good as the .53 .? Engine brands seem to avoid common sizes nowadays ...

MVVS ?

If you have to have a .61....get the Magnum or the Tower....either one will whoop
the pants off the FX. If the plane will handle a bit more suds....stick a Tower .75
in it....:D

I will have to throw my hat in here and say the MDS .68 is a great engine, I also have the early version of the Irvine .72 called the Q72 and it runs much like a .91.

The MAN report had it and the OS FX rated poorly on power. In fact the LA .65 did better than the FX, but it would not be allowed in competition with a 10cc limit.

I can't speak from experience, but the Evolution 61 has been getting some very good reviews in the mags.

I agree with Adrian, the Magnum .91XLS. Forget the .75's, the maggie .91 is the same size as the .61 and puts out tons more power. It is also the easiest hand starting engine I have owned in years. Usually 1 back flip. If your plane can't handle the 14 inch prop, use a 12-8 or 9. Mine has never missed a beat and my OS .91FX stays home. Great engine for over powering 60 size planes.

If you really want some power, add a performance Specialties Ultra Thrust muffler. They have a long one for the 14 inch props and a short one for the 12-13 inch props. Adds nearly a thousand rpm. Love mine.

Whenever some one mentions they need a .60 engine I assume that they need that size for a reason. Plane can't take much more power, or maybe size is limited by competition rules. Otherwise the .74 or .91 sized engines that weigh the same or little more are a good idea. Consider also the SuperTigre .91.

Super Tigre! The .60-.75 & .90 all have the same bolt pattern crank threads ECT. The .90 is taller but that's it. For $150. the ST .60 is hard to beat.

I can get the ST 61 for $105 and the 91 for $145 at my LHS. I replaced the carb on my TT61GP with a perry carb and that engine came alive. It easily had more power that my FX61 and K&B 65. I recently replaced it with a GMS 75 and have yet to run it.

I actually quite pleased with my little OS 65LA. Right now I have it installed on a Kangke Fun 50 and it hauls it around very well. The engine ran right out of the box, and the price is the same as the 46FX. The engine is very happy swinging a 12x6 prop and once I get another gallon or so through it I'll switch to a 13x6.

Oooppps,

I forgot to mention I plan using this engine in a .60 sized warbird, something like a Corsair / Focke Wulf, 62'' wing span, like the Top Flite ones.

If I got i right, I can go either with a Magnum .91 XLS, or with another good .91 engine. I did not know 91 engine were just a bit heavier than the .61s. It is hence worth to use them on .61 birds.

I just got thru breaking in a Thunder Tiger .61 PRO and is a very reliable, low idle engine and it turned an APC at 12,000...this engine was very easy to start and was good on fuel. I also broke in a Super Tigre G.61 and it turned the same prop at the same rpm and was very easy to start until the sinch bolt the holds the carb in broke, and the muffler bolts kept backing loose. Even with all the bolts tight and it running good it leaked fuel from somewhere...probably the front bearing. Even with all the problems I had with the ST I would still buy another because there are what I call small problems. The TT.61 PRO ran perfectly from the very first start all the way to the bottom of the gallon with no leaks and no bolts comming loose.
