Presented at the Shizuoka Fair in Japan: the OS 46 AX. It seems to be in between the FX and the LA series...

I'm just going to guess here but I'll bet the squared muffler increases volume to keep noise down and fewer head bolts and new case design reduces weight. just my two cents worth. I'll bet over in japan they catch alot more flak about noise than we do in the states.

Kinda looks like its "neebie" friendly....answer to the evolution. Is that the marketing?
The muffler and head design look like some conceptualization from that engine. |

But did you notice the price? Y17,000? That's more than the 46FX, and with only four head screws I'll be even less likely to buy it.

Not enough detail in the picture to make a good judgement. So lets work with what we can see.
Muffler: rectangular cross section is better. Attenuates sound better and gives more volume with similar outside dimensions. Crankcase: Looks like ball bearing to me, especially at the front. Carb: Looks like a 2 needle FX carb. Cylinder head: 4 bolts just like Supertiger has been using since the '80s. More cost effective without a loss in performance. Price: Japanese stuff usually costs less in the US than it does in Japan, especially when you consider mail order discounts. No one sells O.S. engines at retail. The FX series is coming up on 10 years - the normal life cycle for a typical O.S. engine design. I wouldn't be surprised if the AX series replaces the FX series. Wouldn't be surprised if it outperforms it, too. |

Looks to me like a new cooling fin design on the head and muffler, and a cheaper remote needle value with a price increase of $10. Tower is already selling this engine BTW.

I suspect Tower is putting standard 46 FX engines in the RTF planes to get rid of them, then they can still sell the removed LAs in the boxes they pulled the FX engines from. OS. Rising prices. OS. Lowering quality. Magnum, the better choice. Bill. |
