Evolution .46
I've got two of these evo .46's and they both have running problems. They don't seem to like the mix of cold weather and high altitude. I'm at 6000ft and it was 33F today. I rev them up and the run great for 30 sec. then the bog out. I've adjusted high and low end and had both our clubs instructors look at them and the can't figure them out. Please help!! I like these engines but I almost lost 2 planes today because of them.

East Carbon eh? I bet it's cold tonight! I would check that you have a hot enough glow plug. You may get a lot of answers here, but if everything is tuned up and the engine just coughs and quits at random intervals I'd go with a hotter plug, you're surely keeping things very cool. And as far as plugs go, you'll get lots of passionate recommendations, but I prefer the Fox Miracle plug. Then spend a while running them on the ground, just to make sure you really have them tuned. Good luck.

RE: Evolution .46
Thats a perfect temp for carb icing check inside the carb see if it had ice in it.

RE: Evolution .46
I was gonna say the same thing...I had symptoms of carb. icing today, w/ temp. @ 25 deg. F. I was shooting touch and go's and had throttle-up problems a few times, so I decided to quit while I was ahead (and before my ears froze off) Think I'll go to 15% and maybe a hot plug...

RE: Evolution .46
Isn't carb ice only a problem at idle?

RE: Evolution .46
I had the same problem today in 35 degree weather at below 1000 foot in altitude. No icing was evident. It seemed to only happen at wide open throttle. It would idle fine. I didn't tweak the needles too hard and will try it again next weekend. BTW, I was using 15% Cool Power if it makes any difference.

RE: Evolution .46
Hey Guys,
I'm at 7,000 feet and I have been having carb ice issues. As long as the air temp is near 40 I'm fine. I will try the higher % nitro fuel, but according to my understanding of carb ice that would make it worse. The nitro makes the cylinder (combustion chamber) run hotter, but would evaporate more quickly, thus cooling the carb even more. I could be wrong though. I have been trying to fabricate a shroud out of brass which attaches to the heat sink grooves on the cylinder and funnels the warmth down to the carb opening. Thats sorta how they work on real planes, heat from the muffler shroud actually warms the intake air that enters the engine. Let me know if any of you have used or created anything like this. Thanks, Russ |
RE: Evolution .46
The Evo .46NT and .455 trainer engine need hotter plugs than the OS 8. I learned the hard way. I now have the older Towers plug in mine and it gave it a ton of more power thanks to W8YE's advice. The burbling and stumbling on startup went away for good. Maybe try an OS A3 and see what it does, but the OS 8 is way too cold for these engines.

RE: Evolution .46
What type of fuel are you running in it? I have several of these engines. I learned they run better on 10% above all other fuels.:)

RE: Evolution .46
I use Omega 15%.
