Need 4Star60 Engine Advice

I'm getting ready to pull a Saito .91 out of my 4*60 and bang it into a Funtana. From what I've read this motor should do the trick, although I'd much rather put a FA-100 in it. $$$'s are an issue with Christmas around the corner. I don't want to moth-ball the 4* and am looking to get similar performance out of another (cheaper) motor. Can you guys recommend any 2-strokes that might work well in my 4*. Not too familiar w/TT's, Mugnums, etc..

You can get a TT or Magnum .61, or Tower/ GMS .75/.76 for a little over $100.00. Friend has a TT.61 in his and it does a very nice job...

Have you checked on the Tower 61 or 75? Both would be great motors for the 4*. I plan on using a ST 90 in mine, but that's a little overkill.

Magnum is another good choice (61, no longer have the 75), and so is TT, however I do not have experience with the TT's.

Tigershark? GMS? Man, there's lot's of choices, eh?

New or used?

I think you just pulled out the best engine choice for the four star, the 91 4 stroker is as good as it gets for that plane. A good .60 two stroke will fly it just fine, but after the saito it will feel anemic. You might consider a .75 tower or supertiger, they are priced right. Good luck!

I agree... The .91 is the ticket for the 4star60, but this boils down to economics and staying married. You know how this addiction takes over.. "We can't make the house payment this month honey... I just bought a new bird" LOL.. I'll check into the recommendations above for sure. This is the 2nd Tower .75 rec I've heard... TY

High quality with max power for their displacement there is the Fox .74, SuperTigre .90. There is the Tower .74, GMS 74, and Magnum .90 with lots of power for their size but somewhat less quality.

Sport is right on about the Fox .74. It will easily turn a 12x8 at 11,200 on 5% nitro.

the super tiger .90 is the best engine- it is more powerful than the saito 100 and will turn an apc 14-6 at about 11,000 on the ground. it takes breakin like the saito. uses 10% fuel runs great. tower has them for $129 now - hard to beat this engine. if you want it a little quieter get a bisson pitts muffler- you lose a couple hundred rpm but gets nice mellow tone. still it will fly the 4 star at least as well as the saito 100. at least for the typical maneuvers the 4 star usually does.

I have a 4*60 with a GMS 76 on it and it flies the 4* very good. Take a look at www.gmsengines.com and you can get one for 85.00 shipped to you. I have bought 2 engines from them and the service is very good. The GMS engine was very easy to break in and it runs very good. It turns a 13x6 prop very easy and gives the 4* great vertical performance. Try one you cant beat the performance for the price. I also have a 4* with a magnum 91 4 stroke and it is the best plane engine combo I have. Here are some pictures of my two 4*'s

The YS91 (110) is a bit heavy but it is a great choice for that plane.
The 91 will turn a 15-8 at close to 9500 , NEVER use full power in a dive unless you do a better job on the horizontal stab than the original. The area near the center on the leading edge will flex and fail at very high speeds . It is not elevator flutter ,the stab can flutter . The LE could be one piece and flying wires wouldn't hurt either . Just a heads up from seeing TWO different planes break the stab in the same place during high speed maneuvers.
NOT saying this is a design flaw . In our quest to brute power these planes it is easy to step outside the design limits . A light 4* 60 will fly with a good 40 two stroker and in years gone by would have been called a 40 size plane ! The YS 91 puts out power much closer to a Saito 120 and will do a fantastic job with that plane . Especially at your elevation.
