Please help me select an engine for my Dazzler
 

I'm practically new to the hobby. I bought an RTF Avistar and I can basically put the plane wherever I want it to be. No problems landing and can do some basic aerobatic stuff... I think I'm ready for my second plane so I went ahead and ordered myself a Dazzler and an OS .46FX engine.

After placing the order, I read some discussions saying that this engine is way too heavy for the Dazzler. I already ordered it, so I can't back off... The Avistar came with a .40LA pre-installed. Will I be better off using the .46FX in the Avistar and the .40LA in the Dazzler?

If so, I'd later want to upgrade my Dazzler for a little more power... Would a .32SX be a good choice?

I'd like to stay with OS Engines for the moment.

Any input is greatly appreciated...

I have a friend who owned a dazzler with a 46FX. You shouldn't have any problems with this combination.

No matter what people tell you. Trust me, you will never go wrong with an OS. The .46 is a great second engine that gives you the largest breadth of 2nd or 3rd planes to choose from.

The Dazzler is 4.25-4.75 lb ....and its engine rating...
Engine Required: 2-stroke .32-.46 cu in (5-7.5cc) or 4-stroke .40-.52 cu in (6.5-8.5cc)

The OS .46 is a perfect engine.....with that combination you will be able to hover and pull into a vertical climb from a stand still. Just remember to use a little throttle managment and use your Avistar to practice throttle managment now so you will be ready. Practicing flying your Avistar at 1/4 throttle, 1/2 throttle and transitioning between these combinations. At full throttle, the OS .46 is going to pull the Dazzler like a bat out of hell so you will only need that kind of speed or power occassionally and most likely you will be flying at 3/4 or less throttle.

I wouldn't go crazy buying an expensive engine for this perticular aeroplane. It's, well...OK if you know what I mean.
A .46FX is massive power and yes it's heavy. Flew mine with a cheapo .46LA... plenty of up-and-go..and light.
Yet it still needed a heep of lead in the tail to get the CG where it needs to be.
The 40LA you have will be more than enough.

Please reread the thread...he already bought it and has buyers remorse. He shouldn't. If he crashes the Dazzler, theres a better than even odds, the next plane he will want will take the 46. I'd say 40% of the planes out there are built for a 46 or will take one.

I would not buy another 40LA.... If you want to exchange engines with your trainer, thats fine, but you will have more fun with the 46 in the Dazzler...the Trainer isn't going to be able to do a heck of more with a 46 as opposed to a 40.

{PS. the 40LA and the 46 are going to weigh nearly the same thing...looks to be about 3 ounces heavier..not a biggee.}

I would buy the 46 first over spending more money for a 32. If you want to take the 40 out of the trainer and you can return the 46 then thats a good choice too. But, someday, I can almost guarantee you that you will have a need for that 46...

The 32 to 39 size engines are wonderful, very powerful and lightweight. Personally, I would build a lightweight version of the Dazzler or Uproar and use the OS 32, Webra 36, or Irvine 39 type of engine, along with a 720 mah Nimh battery and small servo on throttle to save weight. A lightweight mac's muffler or mousse can setup would help too. This will result in a beautifully flying Dazzler that will fly "on the wing" and be a pleasure.

My Dazzler has a OS 46SF (the predisesor to the FX but is just as heavy) and it flies great, might have to add a little to the tail but when you want or need that power it IS there. Put a 12x4 prop on it once it is broken in and have a blast. Just keep it on low rates till you get used to it and the low pitch prop is to help it from going to fast and getting flutter not to mention the unlimeted verticle you will have. When landing, this plane will slow down real nice and if you have a computer radio add expo to soften the controls a little. And when you get the hang of flying it turn up the rates and it will spin like a top with full ailerons.

I think you should use the 46fx in dazzler, you will be really disappointed with the os40la, believe me, if u want an airplane with no vertical problems, the os40la IS NOT ENOUGH

What about a four stroke guys? The plane sits high enough to have prop clearance on takeoff and a .70 Surpass ought to be interesting with a good pitch, say a 10?

I've got the ARTF version for some fun flies coming up here in Michigan shortly and I'm debating whether to use a .70 Surpass as I really haven't poked around with 2 strokes very much. We run 94 db at our field up here and most of us run small two's or fours as a general rule.

A .52 surpass is cute, but just enough I think to pull this plane - unlimited vertical? No way...

The OS .46fx is a great choice. You could have gone with a .40 more inexpensive engine but like others have said your next plane will more than likely use a .46 and the FX is a good selection for it as well. I like the OS's but for the .46 I go with TT pro 46 it is a lot cheaper and has almost as much power, just something to think about.

I have a 46fx on my dazzler, yes, it is a little heavy, but i think 40la is not power enough for this plane!! With 46fx it flyes like a rocket!!

Hey guys, I am half done with my uproar kit and am going to be putting either the rudder or elevator servo in the tail to help with the balence. That isn't my idea but a bunch of people here have said to do so. My plane will be using the new OS .46AX. I have an AX on my skyraider mach-2 and LOVE IT. I think if you were to put a 70 size for stroke you would end up with a powered lawn dart with all that weight. Anyway are you building an ARF or kit because I have read that the kits come out a good bit lighter. If you get the FX or the AX you will NEVER regret your choice. Happy fly'in...

I know this thread's been dead for awhile, but I have the same question and don't need to open a new thread. I just started my Dazzler kit and I have a choice of two engines to put in it. I have a Tower Hobbies .46 that puts out 1.75HP (according to the specs) and a Thunder Tiger .42 that puts out 1.1HP (again per specs). The TH .46 wieghs 475 grams and the TT.42 weighs 345 grams. They are both well broken in and run great. I have had both on other planes and I like both of them. Which would be a better choice for this plane? I would like vertical performance. Would the TT .42 pull it out of a hover? Or should I go with the TH .46?

It's a given that the 46 would be more than enough for that little plane.

Personally I like planes that fly one the wing, and feel light and nimble. Although the 46 would still tend to feel that way on that plane, the 42 would be awsome if you built the rest of the plane light around it.

If you go with the 42, I would challenge you to use a light battery like a 720 mah nimh AAA pack, and mini servos where possible.

I have an Uproar that I am assembling, and I am going to go with an OS 32 or Webra 35 (same weight), and build it light. The Uproar is a little lighter than the Dazzler to begin with, because of no turtle deck though.

Note that the 42 is really a 39 if I remember correctly. It's a very tuned little powerhouse though that really benefits from the lack of weight ball bearings would add and runs like a 45!

Tower-46 .

Even in my lightweight Magic-3D the TT-42 was not enough... Yet the TH-46 is supposedly similar to the FX-

Yeah, from what I understand the TH .46 and OS .46AX are very comparable. So far, I have one vote for each, that not helping:)
I guess it will depend alot on the AUW when I'm done. I've heard that the kits build much lighter than the ARF's. I'll try to keep it light, but I don't think I'd use mini servos anywhere but on the throttle. If this plane behaves anything like the one on my G2, I'll need all the servo torque I can get!

Mini servos usually have more torque than standards, unless you get into the high end standards. The minis are lighter and faster but more expensive.

I have flown uproars for years, I think that for the money they are the best plane you can fly. I realize that there are plenty of other planes to fly that can do more. I just enjoyed the simplicity of the plane. I started with a OS LA40 engine, then when I was used to the plane I upgraded to a 46 supertigre and loved it. Heck, I have even run a morris powerhouse on it! This was a bit too much power for the plane and if developed quite a bit of flutter at high speeds. (ever exploded a plane in midair snap rolling!) Anyway, I think my personal choice would be the supertigre 45.
You won't be dissapointed with that plane!

ST-45 is a good call (I have been meaning to try one of those or the ST-51)... The Morris powerhouse is basically a Rossi-45 [X(] and that would have been fun to watch!

To the gent who is building the uproar and bought the OS-50SX, nice work! I have one (w/Tower muffler $15-) and I could not be more impressed--- It is in the same category as an Irvine-53 IMHO ;) and that is a raving endorsement for me---

The Webra-50GT is the lightest of the main-stream engines and has TONS of power, for anyone engine shopping please consider the Webra--- and it runs on 0-5%

Also, for the folks using STD servos remember you can use a 6V RX batt. and get from 48 oz. of torque to about 60oz. on a Fut- 148 or 3003- no regulator required...

Ernie Misner is Right! I had a Dazzler w/OS .40SF. Had to put 6 OZ of lead in tail. New plane on work bench is an Uproar. I'll be using an OS .32sx, nimh 720 pack, and Hitec HS 81 Servos. I may even make lightening holes in airframe. Light planes fly better and I figure that my uproar will be nearly one full pount lighter than my DAzzler was. Anyone can fly an engine, it takes a skilled pilot fo fly on the wing. Good luck and happy flying.

i have been flying for about a year now and i learned on a scratch built plane then went to a .10 size shrike with an os .25fp. i just got a dazzler for christmas and i'm going to put a gms .47 on it do u guys think there will be any problems.

and i would really like to get into 3d flying

The GMS .47 will have TONS of power for the Dazzler. You can't go wrong and are bound to get a lot of engine for the money, as with the ST or Tower engine.

Meanwhile, some of us like building light and flying on the wing...:-)
