I was just curious if 3-in-1 oil is essentially the same thing as after run oil. For my TT pro 46 can I use 3-in1 after a day of flying or to store the engine like I would use the after run oil ?

No, 3 in 1 oil is to thin and makes a very poor after run oil. The least expensive is ATF (automatic tranmission fluid) or any air tool oil. Some people use Marvel Mystery oil which is better than nothing but not as good as Marvel Mystery Air Tool Oil or any other air tool oil. Also remember that just a drop or two is not sufficient. You must use enough to completely coat the bearing surfaces in the crankcase and the cylinder wall and wrist pin bearings, about a teaspoon full or more and you need to manually turn the engine over a few times with it in different attitudes to get the oil in all the proper places. On a two stroke, you can inject the oil thru the carb or exhaust port. Some people even take out the plug and squirt some in the cylinder head but I do not recommend that as, every time you take out the plug and replace it, you risk doing some damage to the threads that hold the plug in. On a 4 stroke, you must inject the oil into the crankcase thru the breather tube, again using at least a teaspoon full or more, and then turn the engine over by hand with it in different attitudes to get the oil distributed over all the bearings. A few drops down the carb will then lubricate the top end.

For many years I have used Rislone as recommendes by the late George Aldrich and a number of other engine builders/restorers. It clings tenaciously to the parts while never becoming "gummy".

Also heed rodney's excelent advice about 4-strokes. It only takes a minute and oil is cheap.

Rodney, are you saying that I can just use ATF in place of the after run oil? I live in South America and sometimes plane supplies can be hard to find and very expensive so it helps to be able to use substitutes. I can find ATF fluid alot easier than after run oil.

3 in 1 oil is actually thicker than MMO that many people are using, may be thicker than ATF oil. Its a good oil for storing your engines.

One of the engine manufacturers once remarked that 3 in 1 oil kept him in business (sorry, I don't recall which one). 3 in 1 is a penetrating oil with a lot of solvents. When these evaporate, a fairly hard gunk is left behind. The same is true of Marvel Mystery Oil. Either is fine if you are going flying next week. I use Rislone and have had engines stay free for years. If you run some castor oil in your fuel, there is less need for afterrun oil.

Omega 15% nitro 2-stroke fuel: The bottle label claims that no after run oil is needed with that fuel.

Gee, I guess your engine is rust or corrosion proof because they printed that statement on the bottle! Do you really think Morgan Fuels will replace your engine or even a bearing because they have this claim on their label. I don't think so. I will gladly take the extra 15 seconds it takes to put after run in my engines and that way I don't even have to ask them. A bottle of Marvel Air Tool Oil costs about $3.00 and will last an entire season. Try and buy a replacement bearing for $3.00.

One of the formulas is atf/marvel mystery oil 50/50 a qt of each will last you 10 years
4 strk use a short piece of fuel line and a 3 or 5cc syringe no needle just put the fuel line
on the end to get it in the engine or buy a bottle of after run oil and refill it

If you want to store your engine for a long period of time I would suggest dip your engine in Methnol for a day or two and then generously flood it with WD-40 and store it for as long as you want.

I also spray a few drops of WD-40 in carb after every flight this keeps the engine clean and reduces varnish build up Plus it keeps the bearings runnign freely like new.

Guys, I am more confused than ever. Some say use ATF, some say use 3-in-1, some say it is not necessary if I use castor oil in the fuel (omega fuels). What do I do?

squirt some oil in it and be happy, this stuff is not rocket science. I learned long ago that most of what people use for after run oil has one thing in common, its color is red.:) Other than that, its all as different as night and day. Just don't use WD 40, or something else out of a spray can. That stuff will dry into the nastiest gummy varnish you ever saw.

3 in one oil is a mix of oils no solvents, see the MSDS for three in one oil.

Notice the distillates in the WD-40 that is not in WD-40? IMO 3 in One oil is better than MMO, but only good for long term storage. The only good after run oil is castor oil.

Corrosion X comes out of an aerosol can and will never dry up. It will be exactly same after five years as when applied.

Machine oil, tool oil, 3 in 1, regular motor oil for that matter, it really doesn't matter. Simply put something in it to keep the engine from wanting to rust, put the engine in a Ziploc bag, and leave it until the next time you get ready to use it again. Like someone has already stated, this isn't rocket science!

Unless it's an Italian engine....

Then a nice Extra Virgin Olive oil is warranted....

Bertolli is one of my favorite...Colavita is a close second.

Right on, Race....I use a splash of that stuff in salad dressing, and my
aero-motors never rust....:)

....I assemble engines with 3-in-one, have been for 30 years....

....any one that thinks WD-40 will prevent rust, needs to think again.
I have RUINED things with WD-40....it is the most over-priced SOLVENT
on this Planet !

I add 3oz of Klotz to every gallon of fuel i use whether it be Cool Power or Wildcat. This brings up the oil content. In my opinion it eliminates the use of after run oil.

I hope it's Klotz castor, and not synthetic. If you're adding synthetic, you're not doing a thing to help prevent rust.
