Rough Settings for Evolution .46
 

Could somebody please give me a rough idea of what needle settings they are using on their Evolution engines???

Got one on my Wild Card, 1st flight out the box, needed 1/8 turn on the high speed needle and ran awesome, until I ran out of fuel and landed. Fueled up and the bloody thing would just not run, got it going eventually but it was all over the place and deadsticked on me after a few minutes.

Went back to the field today, and had 4 of the engine experts in the club to have a look at it for me. Managed to get it running, but was just dieing when opening the throttle. After a bit of tinkering with the low-end, we got it singing, and put her on the runway, I took off, done 1/2 a circuit, and then it got erratic and died, and I had to land deadstick again.

Please help me, I'm losing my mind with this bloody engine. I'm using GX5 Model Technics Fuel, the stock plug, and a 12.25x3.75 APC Prop.

It is difficult to say anything without actaully seeing the engine.coz the symtoms u described can be caused by a lot many factors.

The most easy and honest solution is:

-install a new O.S. No.8 glow plug (throw away the old one:-)

-if u or a friend has an O.S. 4B carburetor install it and check how the engine responds now.If this helps tell me. I will tell you how to trouble shoot your with your carb. We ll srat from the root causes and step by step track the results.

Could this be gone after one flight?

As I say, it's now running, but dies when you open the throttle

Did you deadstick into the weeds and nose the plane over?

Maybe the clunk line in the tank is pinched off?

Check the basics first.

With an empty tank...and the throttle fully open...remove the pressure line from the muffler and
blow into it. You should be able to blow air through the entire system with some small resistance.

If it's like trying to blow up a glass bottle....you've pinched the lines someplace.

Another side to this of course is an air leak in the lines. Do you see bubbles in the fuel line while the
motor runs?

Yes glow plugs can go bad after just a few runs, on a new engine. Bits of shavings from manufacturing can lodge into it and it may not glow as it should. This brings up another point. There's a thread about shavings in new engines just started recently. Worthwhile to read. Yours sounds like possible fuel delivery problem though, maybe?

You might also check the fuel line between the needle valve and the carb it might have got nicked if you did not remove it while installing the engine.
You might also review your fueling procedure. You might have injected something into your fuel tank which in-turn might have lodged somewhere in your fuel lines or intakes.

Thanks all for the replies, we've tried the usual stuff like blowing thru the fuel lines, check them for leaks etc....

Sounds like the Glowplug may be feasible then, because one thing I did notice, the gunk coming from the exhaust on it's succesful flight was VERY black, like what you wipe off the dipstick when you're checking the engine oil on your car.

Any suggestions of what plug would be suitable on the Evolution (please don't say the one that's on it cos they are a swine to get hold of)

The black is an indication of two aluminum parts rubbing together. Perhaps your muffler is loose?
