Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
I have OS and Saito engines. I was contemplating the purchase of a YS- 110. I read some threads, spoke to the Tech at Centeral Hobbies, and a couple club members. It appears I will spend more money for this YS-110 up front in lieu of Saito or OS. I can't use my 15 % Cool Power with a 3% Castrol oil I add. I must now purchase a 20/20 blend and replace the two rubber washers in the front of the engine each year if I don't use this engine over the winter months. The washers are a few dollars a piece. I can't justify the cost and maintenance for this engine.
I suppose I've been lucky with all my current engines. While I see some of my members at the field trying to tweak there YS engines in, I'm fly 3 to their 1.If it's the over power factor ( by reading some of the treads it appears to be number one thing out there ) then why not just buy the next size Saito or add a pump? |
RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
In terms of cost for the engine itself, the YS is not really more expensive than OS & Saito. Exact comparisons are not possible, but a pumped YS 110 at $324 from Central Hobbies appears to be about the same price as the non-pumped Saito 120 on special at Horizon, and cheaper than the pumped OS 120 for $360 at Tower Hobbies. The YS is lighter by 2 oz vs the Saito, and 6 oz vs the OS, and more powerful than both. Granted, the power comes (partly) at the expense of higher nitro (more $) fuel, and typically more routine maintenance than the OS and Saito. Also the addition of a pump & regulator does complicate the setting up and tuning of the engine, at least potentially. However once the engine is properly tuned, you have a better running system, and the advantages of fuel tank on cg (if that matters to you). Since I learned how to set up pumped fuel delivery (not really that difficult), I prefer not to do any more models un-pumped.
I have and enjoy OS & Saito four-strokes along with my YS engines. On the whole, the former are easier to maintain and definitely cheaper fuel-wise. The YS are a bit more trouble, but worth it, IMHO. As far as performance goes, YS is clearly a notch or two above the others. The Saito & OS are sport engines, whereas YS is built for competition (pattern, in my case). If you're not competing, then OS & Saito are all you need. |

Oh no... Youv'e let the worms out of the can :D
"I'm fly 3 to their 1.If it's the over power factor ( by reading some of the treads it appears to be number one thing out there ) then why not just buy the next size Saito or add a pump?" There ya go, you answered your own question |
RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
I agree. Sound like you answered your own question. Stay with what you like.
I have 3 YS engines and totally agree with Majortom. You will one day buy one, just to try it. Thats why I did. I have been satisfied with the YS engines. But it is hard to beat a good running Saito. OS is great, and reliable. Perhaps a bit heavy, but a tank never the less. In fact, I dont think there is a "bad" 4 stoke out there. |
RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
In my opinion, YS engines are definitely worth the extra cost. They are my favorite to operate. I spent more time tuning a pumped OS than a YS. In fact, all three of my YS 110's achieved a rock solid idle after a couple of tanks running on the bench. I have yet to have a flame out or a deadstick with any of my YS 63's or YS 110's.

YES!!!

RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
YS!!!! I have the YS 1.10 on my ultra stick 60.. I run 30% heli and I turn a 16X7 @ 9800... I am going purchace a .63 for a cub I am building.. my YS performs better than any 120+ out there... As far as tuning.. I needed very little adjustment... the low end was right on, and I just had to fiddle with the high end.. Suggestion.. Run it rich.. When the ys engines run lean the start to knock, when this happends, look out, your prop's about to go flying.. run mine a little rich, and do not notice a difference.

RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
i've been running YS 4 strokes for quite a few years now. What you really need is to seperate myth from fact(which is going to be really hard to do!). You do not have to replace O rings once a year but it is a good idea if you fly the bejeeses out of it. If its one of several planes you fly during the year then you could go 3-4 years without any harm. It costs $20 for an O ring set and a gasket set. I tune the YS 's the least of any of my motors. I pull it out fuel and fly! Very seldom do I touch the needle.
No special treatment, no added oil to the fuel. The only thing you will need to do is...at the end of the flying day, empty the fuel tank and then start the motor and run it dry(keep the glow on it and crank until it no longer fires!). I've pulled motors off planes after this and bagged them for storage. When pulled out there's no problems, just fuel and go. If you are comfortable with the OS and Saito's then stick with them. I feel a Saito is more trouble than a YS (I've owned a couple 180's!). My 120AC holds it own against the Saito 180! |
RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
Your are correct when you said I answered my own question. Like Mighty Mouse said I will buy one to try it and I just did. I purchased the YS 140 Sport from Central Hobbies. They currently have 140 Sport on sale for $ 399.00. Thanks for all your comments, I appreciate it.

RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
I know why Richard buys them, he like the boxes.;) I tried one at LadyFlyers suggestion and now I have three.
|
RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
I haven't seen the box yet. I heard alot of good things about the 140 Sport.

RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
You got a great engine. I am sure you will like it. But I will admit YS is not everyone's cup of tea.

RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
They are worth it to me, just got my 63FZ from UPS today.

RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
I have only one, but keep looking for an excuse for more. And the one, a 120 FZ, is looking for a new home, but it should be arriving any day now :D. Fantastic engine though.
In the UK, the 120 was cheaper than both the OS 120, and Saito 120, so no contest on that front. Saito has now come down in price, but about the same as the new 110. I keep eyeing up the 110, and 140 sport, just need suitable planes for them to go into. I am now completely hooked on 4 strokes. So far it is all Saito, with the one YS. Just 3 2 strokes left to sell. |

YES
and that also includes YS 2strokes! |
RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
Gents,
Has anyone got the manufacturers specifications on these legendary powerplants...in particular the power /torque curves. Power data in BHP,PS,KW...anything.. regards,Dave. |
RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
everything should be on the YS Performance web site or the Central Hobbies web site.

RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
I only have one of the pretty red boxes (FZ .91), and I haven't even run the thing yet. I was thinking about learning how to run the thing on an Astro HOg and eventually moving it to my 60 sized Tsunami, but maybe the Hangar 9 Corsair....
Decisions, decisions.... |
RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
ORIGINAL: MOTORMAN17 I have allways run ys 20/20 fuel in my Saito's anyway. Do you break the engine in with the same fuel that you normally fly with? |
RE: Are YS Engines Really Worth The Extra Cost
Note that YS 20/20 contains 20% straight synthetic oil. No YS 20/20 fuel on the market contains castor, which should tell you something. It's fine to use 30% heli fuel. Yes, I do break the engine in with the same fuel that I normally fly with, which is Powermaster YS 20/20.
