OPS 180 glow

I have a chance to buy an OPS 180 glow. I can get it at reasonable price but can't find any info about it.
Can anyone here give me some info about this engine?
Thanks
Ron

RE: OPS 180 glow

Ron, it's a long stroke engine and they recommend large props for it, it has a Delorto pump carb, much Like a Walbro. Even at that they recommend using muffler pressure. It runs very quiet and smooth, I converted mine to gas for a while but converted it back. It has a needle bearing rod and can run on the ST low oil fuels after break in. I can get the actual prop recommendations for you tomorrow.

RE: OPS 180 glow

I have a friend who has this engine on a big Hots. The engine ate a ring and he cannot find parts for it. I would appreciate any information as to where parts may be found (ring plus some other bits). An internet search hasn't been very helpful. I agree on the assessment of the engine - makes lots of power. This one is not so quiet because it is running with a non-muffled pipe.

RE: OPS 180 glow

OK, I dug out the instructions.
Break in prop 18x7 or a 20x8
Fuel, this is almost unbelievable, 92 to 95% methanol and 5 to 8% Castor "M"
Mine has only been run on Fox 5% nitro w/20%-50/50 lube.
Carb setting low speed needle- 3 turns out, high speed needle- 5 turns out.
Props suitable after break in, 20x8, 20x10 20x12 and 22x8.

Call or email Frank Bowman. He make rings.

I have used his service on a Ryobi and it was great.

RE: OPS 180 glow

I'm not sure what needs replacing other than the ring. There may have been some bearing damage and I'm not sure about the condition of the liner. I would like to find out whether there is an OEM supplier of parts for this engine (preferably in North America) or even someone who can do a competent evaluation and repair.

Thanks

RE: OPS 180 glow

The e-mail address for Frank Bowman must have been changed, i tried mailing him 2 times and got a mailer demon message that this is no longer the e-mail address for Frank. I wanted to ask him what size half moon key i need for my ops 1.80. Ive tried every size i can find and none of them are the right size, anyone know what size i need, i even tried filing one down and using it, but no matter how much time i spent trying to get it the right size, it still had slop in it.

Thanks, any info would be appreciated

RE: OPS 180 glow

I have three of the OPS Maxi 30 engines ( sucker for a good deal I guess ) that I bought reaally cheep at some of the
local hobby shops. I had planned on flying 2 of them and using the third one for parts. I had 1 on a 90" Road Runner ( heavy
18# or so ), marginal power for the weight, so I replaced it with a BT64 Fuji, but haven't flown it yet( work gets in the way of life )
I have 1 converted to gas by Ralph, but Hobbsy's comment about the heat issue makes me have second thoughts about gas,
so I may change the carb back to the stock Delorto carb and run methanol on ignition since I plan on an inverted mount on a
Dyna Flite Spitfire.

RE: OPS 180 glow

I was thinking of changing mine back to gas after running it an additional hour or so since changing it back to glow and see if the additional break in may have limbered it it up some. If it still runs hot, a Diesel head will be the next change. With that long stroke it will make a great Diesel, a real thumper if you will.
