First time cleaning an engine
 

Hi,

I have an old webra 40 that was given to me that is pretty grimey. When it was given to me the owner said the compression isn't what it used to be and needs an electric starter to start it.

I have heard of using anti-freeze to clean an engine in a crock pot, but i don't have a crock pot so would an old camping pot i don't use any more be fine? I have some other questions about it too.

1) At what temperature do i heat the anti freeze at, My stove settings are 1 thru 8.

2) How long do leave the engine in?

3) Do i take apart the engine when it's in the anti-freeze? or only the glow plug?

4) is it safe? will the anti freeze blow up in my face?

5) will this help my engine?

You say your stove settings are 1-8. Does this mean you will do this indoors? If so DO NOT!

Antifreeze is poisonous, as are the fumes.
If you have pets one lick, and it will destroy their nervous system. On the other hand if you have an obnoxious cat..........................

Use the cheap ordinary antifreeze. The biodegradable stuff can do weird things I am told.

I do mine in a crockpot on the medium setting, overnight in the garden shed.

I take the engine apart as much as I want, usualy completely except for bearings.

For real burnt on obstinate stuff you may have to scrub a bit, usualy just the outside.

When I am finished with the stewing part I wash the engine with water, thoroughly.

Oil it all up and reassemble

Inside? NO NO NO

I have a camping stove. I think I will let it sit during the day so i can keep an eye one it. When you say after it's done just oil it up. Do i use after run oil? I'm thinking i'm just going to take the head off the engine and leave the carb open. And do i need to have a lid for the pot?

I should have also said to remove plastic parts from the engine.


Are you doing this over an open flame camping stove? Hmmmmm. I am not so sure about that.

I do not use after run oil. I will not pay the crazy price for a small bottle. I have always used Automatic Transmission Fluid. A quart costs less than $5.00 at Canadian Tire.

Righty...

All the info thus far is good. Cheap antifreeze, etc.

Go to Wal-Mart and get a cheap $10.00 crockpot and use that. That crock should be "marked" so as
not to EVER prepare food in it afterwards as antifreeze is poisonous as all get out and I'm not sure you can
completely clean it from the crock.

Fill 'er up with AF,toss in the motor...park the crock outside (NEVER indoors) and plug it in.

Let it stew all day and the motor will be shiny clean.

Put the motor back together with lots of oil and then LEAVE it together.

Are you getting the message?

Do it in a crockpot for about eight hours!

Anoher advantage of getting the crockpot is it can be used as a safety chamber when charging Lithium polymer batteries. Apparently they can blow up in your face!! Empty out the Anti-Freeze first though.
