Odd sized SuperTigre
 

I've got a ST engine marked G20 on the side, that's smaller than my 2000 and larger than a .91 Webra. I was told it was a 1.48, but I've never heard of that.

Has anyone else heard of something like this?

If so, it depends on how old the engine is as to what it is...it could be an old G-2000 20cc (1.2 cu in) or the later G-2300 which shared the same crankcase casting (23cc or 1.4 cu in). If you were told is was a 1.48, it's very likely the later G-2300 version.

Great engine but a questionable carb depending on the vintage. There are lots of threads about the carb mid-range problems in any number of forums. If you have the newer, more problematic carb, there is a fairly well-accepted fix if you feel up to Dremel-ing your carb or you can simply replace it with a Perry carb and pump/carb combination.

To identify which carb you have, remove the carb drum and look at the cam groove...if it's straight, it's fine, if it has a dogleg shape, it's the newer carb that produces a rich midrange.

Nope the case is significantly smaller and the weight is at least 20% lighter. Another difference is that it has more of a slot for an exhaust vs the squarish of the 2000/3000 series. The mounting holes are further apart too.

Just some more info on the engine

Head is 2 5/8 x 2 1/4
Cylinder is 1 3/4"
Total height is 4 1/2"
Length is 4 1/4 back of housing to front of thrust washer.

It will take the 3000K series/MAG 4500 carb in the inlet hole with no bushing.

It has a backplate with a nipple in the center - looks factory.

Hmmm...the 2000 and 2300 are the only ST I'm aware of that were marked G20 on the crankcase. Perhaps the engine is one that was not imported to the states? Do you have a digital camera so you could post a few photos of it?

Your engine is the SuperTigre G2300. It uses the basic G20 design series.

The SuperTigre 2000 was an "S-2000" or "S-2000K".

Over the years, Supertigre had several design series, which were indicated by the first number. The number after the slash is the displacement. For example, they had the G12/s9, G20/15, G20/23, G21/29, G21/35, G21/40, G21/46, and so on.

Later, SuperTigre created the "S" series of engines, and now the modern "G" series.

The series designator is the basic design concept, dictating the porting of the engine, and relationships between bore, stroke, intake timing and so on. Then they made a variety of engines in different sizes, using the same basic design, with only minor "tweaking" to allow for the differences in displacement.
