Evolution Trainer Power System Glow Engine
 

I'm a newbie and looking into buying my first trainer. I'm debating between the hangar 9 xtra easy II and the hobbico SuperStar MK II
My main concern is the engine that comes with this. The xtra easy has the evolution and the super star has the OS .40 LA engine
My question is that which one you guys think it's more reliable.
Please help!

We have the XE2 as our club trainer, and I'd recommend it. The Alpha engine will run rings around the 40 LA, and will really put out some power if you want it to later (when you're ready to handle it) with a couple of inexpensive mods...

The Evo .45 is a fantastic 2 stroke engine. It has tremendous power and is very reliable. The only drawback is the engine weight. I wouldn't hesitate in putting mine in other .40 sized planes.

You can always put a 2 bladed prop on the Evo for more power.

I love the OS la engine but it is what it is, a bushing type airbleed carb engine. No comparison to the Evo engine's bearing and carb design. I have an Evo trainer engine that I took the flywheel off (lightened it up considerably) and now fly it on my Hanger 9 Twist. I don't think the Twist would fly nearly as well with the OS. Buy the Evo system and you will have no regrets.

on the power trainer system a 12x6 or 12x4 should do good.

Old thread...but if anyone's still interested, a 12X4 APC works well for fun fly and 3D type flying, and a 10 X 7 for a sport type...
At least that's what I have been using with the Alpha engine (.455 )
I put an 11 X 5 on the engine when it was still on the XE-2 and that worked much beter IMO than the three blade 10 x 4 or what ever the pitch of that paddle prop is.

The Alpha engine is an earlier model and is different than the TPS engine available today. It too is a .455. The TPS is a better engine.

I used an APC 11x7 on mine after I took the flywheel weight off. Also, the baffle was removed from the muffler. The .40LA isn't in the same class as the Evo. Besides, the Evo is very cheap for that power. Plus, it has a chromed sleeve and OS doesn't use chrome.

I think the Evo 3 bladed prop is a 9x7, but I could be wrong.
