Problems with cox engine - help a newbie - karma for life!
 

hi, im a bit new to all this, im currently building an rc conversion from a free flight, its a balsa and tissue/dope cessna with a cox pee wee engine. . the only trouble is i have only built electric and dont have a clue about how to set it up to run - help please! (i have no manual or instructions with the engine)

Cox engines using 15-16% nitro in fuel. Low nitro making problems.
Fill fueltank, turn the main needle 3-4 turns and some drops in exhaustport, then connect to glowplug. Now you are ready to start engine. When engine are running, disconnect plugclips from glowplug. Adjust engine until the engine running fast and clean.

I've seen some of these engines have some sort of spring loaded prop shaft, out of curiosity, what's this for??

the spring thing is a starter, wind the prop backwards and let go. also makes sure the engine starts and runs in the correct direction, the reed valve engines have no problem running backwards.

the cox engines also need a lot of oil, 20-25% and preferably all castor.

cheers guys will try that at the weekend - btw, i heard the pee wee has an integral fuel tank - how long will it run with that diddy thing? also, which nip is the filler? can you attatch an external fuel tank?

haven't played with a pee wee in ages so don't remember run time but it's probably under two minutes.
either nipple can be used for filling and when fuel comes out of the other it's full. oh, and if the nipples are on the tank itself and not cast as part of the backplate then you have a widow and not a pee wee...

you can add a tank but the best method requires that you cut a big hole in the tank...the link i gave you before will have a lot more info on doing this plus some photos. do a search there or just ask, they're usually pretty nice guys if they've had their coffee.
