POLL---POLL---POLL! Best Engine
 

The poll today is about .40 size engines. With so many brands of engines being made today coming in nearly every shape and color what is the best for your dollars. The choice is just to much for the beginner. Please consider not only bhp but torque as well while keeping in mind the person who is on a hobby budget. Dont forget to tell why you believe your answer to be true or at least best! Thanks.

The GMS engines are the worst of that bunch.
Spend lots of hours trying to get the them to run like normal engines.

You left out what I consider the best of the bunch: Saito. They make a .40 also, and while it isn't the cheapest, or most powerful, its reliablity and service make it what I would choose. You generally get what you pay for.

One other that you left out, MVVS, best kept secret in the RC industry. For a good 2-stroke MVVS gets my vote.

I had a 40fx that I broke in on a gp big stick, it ran flawless even after loosing the prop and hitting 20k rpm, it sounded like it anyways. Everyone thought it was a 46 after i put on the tower muffler, really woke it up.

Sorry bubba but you have left out several brands which makes the poll ineffective. If your trying to find an engine for yourself, this is not the way to go about it because the best is not necessarily the most expensive.

OS ,ST ,TT are great engines and I have no problems with most of the line up but theyalos cannot perform in certain planes which others can. It just depends on what kind of plane it is and how you want to fly it.

ONe of the better ones super tigre Tower has a deal for 49.95 for the 40. irvines are great but now quite expensive have their 39,46
and 53s got them before the huge price increases

Of those listed I like the TT and OS just because they are "generally" plug-n-play engines, perfect for the beginner... But I know that MVVS are VERY impressive based on what I have seen-

You said 40 size so I picked the SuperTiger.40 It's a GREAT engine for $49.99 at TowerHobbies.
The GMS is THE worst I have ever had, hands down.

As Jimbo says, value has a lot to do with which engine you buy. Believe it or not, there are flying fields where you will never see a OS engine. Then there are others where OS is about all you see.

I don't know about GMS engines being the worst. I have not seen anyone successful with a Fox engine. If their out there, I'd like to know who they are and what their secret is.

Just about any of the engines are pretty good. Ive owned just about all of the brands at one time or another. Although, the engines available today are much different than the ones 10-20 years ago.

If you are looking for a good, cost effective, and reliable powerplant....... and I have to select one from the list ..... my vote is for the Thunder Tiger.

A glaring fallacy of this poll is that for an individual's opinion as to "best'' relative to the others to be valid he would have to have experience with each of the 13 brands on the list. I expect few respondents have. I confess to have owned only eight of the listed brands, and not all of them in .40 size.

The poll will also lean toward the brands which are in wider use. On the surface this might say the more popular or widely sold engines are "better", but this is not necessarily true. Factors such as advertising budgets and distribution networks (think Great Planes, Tower etc.) are primary determinants. Many fine engines are seldom seen due to lack of availability in the LHS.

Best 46? Easy to use and value for money? It has to be the TT46. Rossis are brilliant engines save for the cost. I love my ST G90 but I do not see the 40 sized ones to be screamers, most people in this range are looking for something that can scream when its necessary, which is most of the time.


MVVS is a great engine, it can idle so low and run on low nitro like 5%. I just hate the way they look and sound. Still a very cheap engine. My pal had an APC 10x7 on his and it hit 13,600 RPM where its hot and humid here. Pretty impressive.

Here I am Paul;) I Have had success with a number of Fox engines. No "secret" that I am aware of, but if you have a specific problem I am sure I or someone else on the forum can assist you with it.

Between helping others with their engines as well as my own engines, I have worked on every make of engine listed on this poll including makes that aren't listed. Of all the makes listed, Fox is the only 2 stroke glow engine that I was unsuccessful in getting to run reliably.Any of my fellow club members that have owned Fox engines have had the same problem. So I ask the question: Is there some sort of special break-in procedure, mixture adjustment, fuel requirement or magic formula to get these engines to run reliably.

I haven't used a Fox engine in many years, all though I still have several NIB. I found back in the late 70's when I was using them, that they preferred Fox brand fuels that were very high in castor content. For me, they always ran well with Fox fuel and lousy with the other brands on the market.

Paul, as noted, I have experienced no undue problems with Fox engines, thus I am not the best source for solving problems. Again if you could be more specific in describing the nature of your difficulties it would be easier to assist. Also you might try http://www.flitelinesolutions.com/. These fellows seem to know all about Fox engines. I would only add that I use fuels with a fair amount of castor in my Foxes, and thus used I believe they are among the most durable model engines made. (Let me quallify that- I ain't tried 'em all, but when I have I'll let you know).
