Mini Tuned Pipe made by Irvine

I was at my LHS and way in the back I found a plastic back with a pretty cool looking tuned pipe. The bag said, "Irvine .40". I brought it up front and it will fit my Irvine .53. The whole in the header wasn't as wide as the exaust outlet on the motor. The LHS dealer said he would take a file and open the hole up for the .53. He said this was a pipe that was made by Irvine and I got the feeling they didn't make them anymore. He only wanted $30 for it and it looked like it might be a good thing. The whole thing was silver with what looked like a header pipe that went into a tappered cylinder. I'd say the whole thing was like 7 or 9 inches long.
Anyone know of this? I'm tempted to buy it since it's cheap and made by Irvine. Since it's for a .40 I thought it might make some good low to mid range torque for me. I'm just speculating though.

Irvine Super Silencer

These used to be pretty popular additions..I don't know if they have made them since the 53 came out.
A Google search turned up mostly pages from UK club pylon racing rules...

I have a very similar silencer made for a ST X25..same construction style and such...

I'm not finding much info on them....

Is your pipe good ? Do you get 600 -800 more rpms? Just curious.

ChuckAuger 08-29-2002 08:50 PM

I don't know..

I have never used it, and sold the X25 it was for...but the Super Silencer should give at least that...

I think I would buy it, try it, and if it doesn't suit you then sell it..I'll bet you can get your money back IMHO

I was thinking the same thing.

Pipes

Billy, apparently tuned pipism is not an exact science, JE lists pipe sizes with numbers like 37/53, so that pipe should be fine on the .53

Great, what I needed to hear. I'll run down there and get it. Don't get me wrong, the Ultrathrust is the king daddy of pipes but I'm willing to take a chance and this thing looks cool too.

Hallo!
I have run several of these Irvine minipipes ( Magic mufflers) when we flew Sport .40 pylon here in sweden a couple of years ago. We used APC 9x7, 9x6,5 or 9x6 props running on straight fuel my engine rewed appr. 17200 on the 9x6,5 and 9x7 props and 18500 rpm on the 9x6 APC.
The pipe were made for the Irvine Sport .40 engine!
These pipes are made to work att 15.000-20.000rpm so do not try a 10x6 on them ( on a .40 engine). it will not get "on the pipe" .
It might work though if you use a ,53 engine. But remember that you have to let the engine rew above 14000 to get the pipe work!

Regards!

hmmmm, well since I'm flying on a profile plane and running a 12.25x3.75 prop that pipe might not be the one for me. The only time I use full throttle is for heading towards the sky. What do you think?

ChuckAuger 08-30-2002 09:34 PM

Well...

In light of what Jaka has posted..I think you should just break down and get the extension for the UltraThrust...I still think that $30 for the Super Silencer would be a good price and you could sell it for at least that (maybe more on Ebay...who knows), but I know the UT will kick some serious booty...Shoot me a PM if you want an offer that might make you happy!!!

I bought it. Put an extension on. Had to drill out one the holes to get the bolt in (too narrow by a little). Got her on today and took her up. I don't have a tach but no where near the additional power the Ultrathrust makes. I guess I learned a $30 lesson. I was willing to take the risk. It took a full turn to get it leaned out (to the right) and even then it was still a little rich. I'll fly it again in the morning and see what I think (I only get 15 min of flight a day). The verticle seemed great. I didn't run out of it. On the ground it wasn't fighting to get out of my hand like the Ultathrust did. We'll see. At the very least I have an extra muffler that looks cool as hell.
